Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Radiation Control Technician to support radiation protection across various areas and activities at the Lab.

Reporting to the Radiological Control Technician Supervisor within the Radiation Protection Group (RPG), you will independently perform radiological work with limited supervision. This role involves performing radiological surveillance, including contamination and dose / exposure rate surveys, and verifying compliance with safety standards and ALARA principles. The technician will support radioactive material handling—such as shipping, receiving, transport, inventory, and control—and contribute to data management, radiological characterization, sample collection and analysis, and air monitoring. The position also involves implementing radiological work controls, supporting waste management activities, participating in incident investigations and emergency responses, and assisting with training efforts.

This role requires work across the LBNL site, both indoors and outdoors, including off-site and field locations, construction and demolition areas, and permitted hazardous waste storage facilities. Regular exposure to hazardous materials, hazardous energy sources, ionizing radiation, and radioactive materials is expected. Security vetting for access to nuclear materials is required. The position includes emergency on-call duties as part of RPG responsibilities.

What You Will Do :

  • Perform radiological work in support of LBNL’s Radiation Protection Program, ensuring compliance with RPG policies and procedures.
  • Conduct routine, specialized, and advanced radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactivity) in laboratories, construction sites, remediation areas, and other work locations.
  • Generate associated documentation, including survey reports, audits, and related records.
  • Perform release surveys for materials, equipment, and property transitioning from radiologically controlled to uncontrolled areas.
  • Evaluate radiological conditions to support the development of technical work documents, such as radiological work authorizations, work plans, and survey plans.
  • Post and label areas and items controlled for radiological purposes.
  • Conduct assessments, audits, and other evaluations related to radiological incidents.
  • Respond to contamination events, personnel exposures, and radiological emergencies.
  • Plan complex radiological work activities with minimal oversight.
  • Provide specialized radiological support for the preparation, packaging, shipment, and transfer of radioactive materials.
  • Support operations related to Material Control & Accountability and Nuclear Material Management.

What is Required :

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in radiation measurement, radioisotope handling, and radiation monitoring, including at least 3 years as a qualified RCT, HPT, or ELT.
  • Education or equivalent experience in specialized scientific or technical disciplines related to radiation protection.
  • Must obtain and maintain qualification as a DOE Radiation Control Technician (RCT) at LBNL.
  • Previous qualification as a DOE,
  • NRC 3.1,
  • DOD RCT, Health Physics Technician (HPT), or Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of radiation safety, measurement techniques, and radioisotope handling, including monitoring, analysis, and isotope identification.
  • Applies specialized knowledge of radiation safety and measurement principles to general assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Works independently within assigned research or support areas, collaborating with internal and external subject matter experts (SMEs) and technical authorities.
  • Experience developing technical guidance, procedures, and quality assurance documentation to support radiation safety and compliance.
  • Ability to be available for on-call assignments as needed.
  • Physical requirements : Routinely lift and transport 40 pounds; frequently bend, stoop, stand, and walk for 4-6 hours per day. Incumbent will be required to successfully pass a routine medical examination as well as successfully pass applicable training, including Respirator Fit Testing, formal HAZWOPER training, and other related emergency response training. Some duties of this position require up to 1 hour per day of the following types of hand use : fine manipulation, keyboard / mouse use, simple and / or power grasping.
