RADIOLOGY TECHNOLOGIST

Summary

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:

Radiographers must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology to position patients and adjust immobilization devices to obtain optimum images of specified area(s) of the body as requested by a physician. He/she must possess good communication skills to explain procedures to patient in order to reduce anxieties and to obtain patient cooperation.

The radiographer will move the x-ray equipment into specified position and adjust equipment controls to set exposure factors, such as time and distance, based on knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols. He/she must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique while also practicing appropriate radiation protection and safety. The radiographer must practice radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding skills, and knowledge of applicable exposure factors, to minimize radiation to patient and staff. He/she may operate mobile x-ray equipment in the , emergency room, or at patient's bedside.

Radiographers independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of radiographic procedures. He/she must prepare, administer, and document activities related to contrast media and medications in accordance with state and federal regulations or institutional policy.

Radiographers are the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and other members of the support team. He/she must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills.

Radiographers use independent, professional, ethical judgment and critical thinking skills while also participating in quality improvement initiatives and customer service practices.

Employment Qualifications:

Education:

• Must be a graduate of an approved/accredited Radiologic Technology program.

Experience :

• Minimum of two years’ experience in a hospital setting as a registered technologist preferred.

Licensure, Registration, or Certification:

• Must have successfully passed ARRT registry examination and have maintained current ARRT registration status.
• Must have received/applied for Maryland State License
• BLS certification required
