The Role of Dean of the J. Murrey Atkins Library

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Library. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as leader of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university.

The Dean oversees the entirety of the J. Murrey Atkins Library collections, spaces, staff, and resources.

Specific responsibilities of the Dean include:

• Implementing best practices in traditional and innovative trends in libraries to support the library’s traditional collections and services along with the development of new strategies to support scholarship, teaching, and learning
• Articulating a clear vision for the role of the academic research library at a large public university in a rapidly growing and changing environment
• Executing on strategies that coincide with the University’s strategic plan and goals of the library while supporting the goals of the colleges and Division of Research through effective use of resources
• Leading and representing the library’s 40 faculty and 45 professional and support staff, cultivating an organizational climate based upon respect, service, open communication, and teamwork
• Facilitating the research and scholarly activities of faculty, students, and staff
• Leading the library’s efforts in fundraising, public relations, and communications with university and external stakeholders, and
• Serving as a member of the UNC Charlotte Deans Council and the University of North Carolina system-wide University Library Advisory Council, a council composed of the directors of the 17University Libraries and a representative from the UNC System office.
