Senior Sales Tax Accountant

Job Description

Handles one or more of the following sub functions : preparing and reviewing multi-state sales and use tax returns; reviewing business licenses and unclaimed property returns; coordinating and managing sales / use tax and business licenses audits, including sample selection and projections; reviewing, testing and updating point of sales systems (production and development environments) to ensure accuracy of tax calculations including rates and taxability determination; and / or reviewing reconciliations and journal entries.

Ensures compliance with state and local sales and use tax laws and regulations and other indirect taxes.

Assists Sales Tax Manager and provides leadership, training and direction to other staff members.

Implements controls to reduce company tax exposure.

Reviews, researches and responds to government notices.

Identifies and communicates solutions to complex, time-critical or recurring business issues.

Manages exemption certificate issuance and management.

Researches complex tax issues, laws and pending legislation to determine its application to operations, including regulations, statutes and case law. Assists with special projects as needed.

Applies general ledger knowledge and accounting principles to ensure accurate financial reporting and tax compliance.

Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of overall sales tax processes and implications across business operations.

Skills and Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

5+ years of experience with multiple entities / multi-state property tax experience such as the processing of real and personal property tax returns and bills

Multiple entities / multi-state business license experience such as the processing of local and state business licenses

Experience and / or general understanding of non-mergers and acquisitions process as it relates to property tax and business licenses (i.e. identifying if and when return and / or license closures, transfers, openings are needed, etc.)

Experience with property tax software (i.e., OPT, SigerTax, SAGE etc.)

Experience with business license applications (i.e., LicenseHQ)

6+ years of experience with general ledger systems and application of accounting principles

Strong understanding of overall sales tax processes and compliance requirements

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with strong time management, organizational, communication and adaptability skills

Previous experience supporting transitions to new third party providers
