Department Information

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description of Job

About the Position

The Geohazards Services Unit provides geological expertise for rockfall rockslide debris flow and landslide geological hazard mitigation design construction and planning. This involves data collection interpretation analysis review and design work that affects planning design construction and maintenance of civil engineering and environmental projects primarily for CDOT but also for other state agencies. The unit also provides emergency response services for geological hazards highway embankment slope and subgrade failures.

As the Geohazards Field and Data Technician (EPST II) in the Geohazards Services Unit you will provide technical support to engineers and geologists within the Geohazards Program and the Soils and Geotechnical Program. You will be required to drive to geohazards sites statewide.

Your duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following

Geohazard Site Inventory and Inspection

  • Participate in the implementation of the geohazard asset management program by conducting site inspections (both field and office based) to facilitate the program asset site inventory efforts. Inspection may require the measurement recording and tracking of slope asset conditions such as pavement and guardrail deformation associated with embankment distress hazard identification and catchment ditch width and capacity or collecting slope measurement data to inform rockfall risk calculations.
  • The position will also observe and direct construction activities for repair of damaged mitigation devices identified during inspections.

Fieldwork to Collect Geologic and Instrumentation Data

  • Collect information and data from geological hazard sites to assist Program Engineers and Geologists to evaluate the stability of the hazard. Examples of information collected are slope angles slope heights rock and soil type etc.
  • The position will also collect data from instruments such as inclinometers piezometers and displacement meters.
  • Logging bore holes is also part of this duty as these are used by Staff and consultant geologists and engineers in slope stability analyses. This requires working geological and material properties knowledge of how the data is collected data collection intervals for down hole instruments and how other above ground instruments are utilized. Subsurface data collection consists of collecting data from inclinometers and plotting the data to show how the hole has moved which is needed to determine shear zones for landslides.
  • Database Maintenance

  • The position will work with consultants and Program staff to populate and manage the geohazard risk assessment database. This is used to define geohazard sites and track geohazard event and site inspections.
  • Work with consultants and other CDOT staff to populate the Geohazards Programs geological event tracking and task management databases with new event data as they occur.
  • Program Administration and Assistance

  • The position will assist the Geohazards Program and the Soils and Geotechnical Program as needed with administrative duties such as filing and equipment inventory.
  • Responsible for entering Geohazard Program invoices into OnBase and tracking purchase order and contract balances.
  • Actively track and communicate balances.
  • Communicate with Geohazard Program staff to determine if the submitted invoices are correct based on the work completed.
  • Work Environment

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8 : 00 am 5 : 00 pm work hours Monday-Friday
  • Approximately 60% spent in the field 40% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout the state to geohazard sites with overnight travel approximately 40% of the time.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Fieldwork may be located in steep mountainous terrain that is only accessible by traversing on foot. You must be willing and be physically able to work in difficult access environments.
  • Must be willing and be physically able to work in variable temperatures (hot and cold) variable weather conditions and at varying elevations up to 12000 feet for long periods of time.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education / Licensure / Certification / Experience :

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • AND

  • Five (5) years of experience in geoscience or transportation-related field.
  • Substitution :

    A bachelors degree in geoscience or closely related field from an accredited college or university AND one (1) year of experience in a geoscience or transportation-related field. (College transcripts required.)

  • Examples of Geosciences and Transportation experienceinclude : logging geotechnical or geological exploration borings; conducting geophysical surveys; collection or analysis of geotechnical or groundwater instrumentation data; geologic mapping; environmental or groundwater sampling or monitoring; construction materials testing; computer aided design or drafting; unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveying; performing unstable slope inspections; or construction oversight for geohazard mitigation systems.

  • Experience assisting with geological investigations and geohazard failure analyses
  • Experience observing construction projects for compliance with standards project plans and specifications
  • Experience assisting with collecting field data including installation and / or reading geotechnical instrumentation
