Associate Director Of Development And Donor Engagement

By working at Harvard University, you join a vibrant community that advances Harvard's world-changing mission in meaningful ways, inspires innovation and collaboration, and builds skills and expertise. We are dedicated to creating a diverse and welcoming environment where everyone can thrive.

Harvard Medical School's mission is to nurture a diverse, inclusive community dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving health and well-being for all through excellence in teaching and learning, discovery and scholarship, and service and leadership.

You'll be at the heart of biomedical discovery, education, and innovation, working alongside world-renowned faculty and a community dedicated to improving human health. This is more than a job - it's an opportunity to shape the future of medicine.

The Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) strives to ensure people of every race, ethnicity, gender, and financial background are represented in science and medicine, while enabling science-related industries and institutions to build a more inclusive workforce. We break down the barriers that prevent many promising young people from pursuing a future in the biomedical fields. BSCP connects talented students and fellows with the mentors, tools, and experiences needed for success in this competitive environment, while building a community that provides a space where participants feel respected, valued, and free to be themselves.

BSCP is at an exciting juncture of growth, and we are seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial fundraising professional to grow and lead our development program. As the first Associate Director of Development and Donor Engagement, you will be important in driving our mission by securing philanthropic support, building lasting relationships with funders, and advancing donor engagement efforts. This highly independent role reports directly to the Executive Director, under the leadership of the Office for Culture and Community Engagement (OCCE) at Harvard Medical School. It offers an opportunity to shape the future of BSCP's development program. The organizational budget is approximately $1.5 million annually, which is raised yearly from private philanthropy.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Develop and lead BSCP's overall development strategy to grow philanthropic support in alignment with best practices; create annual plan and calendar.
  • Lead all day-to-day activities for fundraising, including identifying new funding opportunities, managing donor communications, and creating case materials.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with corporate, individual, and institutional donors; design and implement a donor stewardship program.
  • Serve as liaison to the BSCP Board Development Committee; engage Board members in fundraising efforts and donor outreach.
  • Plan and execute fundraising events, such as the annual Evening of Hope gala, in collaboration with the Board, event co-chairs, and host committees.
  • Research prospective donors, foundations, and companies; manage submission of proposals, grant requests, and funding inquiries.
  • Oversee the implementation of donor-management software, ensuring smooth gift processing and reporting.
  • Collaborate with OCCE to identify and pursue co-sponsored funding opportunities.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for funding, donations, and fundraising campaign inquiries.
  • Oversee the implementation and integration of BSCP's new donor-management software, including developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure seamless gift processing, timely acknowledgments, and accurate reporting for enhanced donor engagement and operational efficiency.

Basic qualifications include :

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in development, fundraising, or donor engagement.
  • Additional qualifications and skills include :

  • Proven experience building and maintaining donor relationships and executing successful fundraising strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with internal teams, administrators, volunteers, and donors to advance engagement and fundraising goals.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and listening skills.
  • High initiative, accountability, and the ability to work independently.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to innovate and drive results.
  • Experience managing donor databases and utilizing CRMs (Bloomerang experience a plus).
  • A strong interest in STEM education.
  • Appointment end date : December 31, 2025. Standard hours / schedule : 35 hours per week. Visa sponsorship information : Harvard University is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Pre-employment screening : Education, Identity.
