You’ll be based in our San Jose office within the S&CF Insights team. S&CF Insights is McKinsey’s center of excellence in advanced analytics for Strategy and Corporate Finance. Its purpose is to empower teams with advanced, yet easy-to-use, analytical capabilities that can generate superior insights and transform client conversations. To this end, the Strategy & Corporate Finance practice, has assembled one of the world’s most sophisticated groups of experts, sets of databases, and analytical techniques.
S&CF Insights is a global team of finance experts and strategists that addresses clients’ questions about valuation and value creation. The center combines the best of McKinsey’s financial analysis capabilities, proprietary tools and insights, broad industry knowledge, and practical application perspectives. Tim Koller, a world-class expert in the field and the lead author of Valuation and Value, is our group founder.

The role provides an unique opportunity to develop a career in Strategy & Corporate Finance, building from your prior academic and work experience. Over time, research analysts will develop a solid grounding in core principles of corporate finance. You will be working with specialists, experts and senior leaders of the practice to help McKinsey teams identify and evaluate critical financial and strategic issues for discussions with senior client executives. You will be leveraging excel-based models, financial databases and research platforms to generate end products in the form of presentations, written summaries and spreadsheets.
Examples of specific activities for the role may include, but are not limited to:
- Analyzing the performance of companies in capital markets
- Assessing the financial performance of companies using growth, margins, returns and leverage ratios
- Conducting outside-in valuation diagnostics using discounted cash flows (DCF) and valuation multiples
- Conducting qualitative and quantitative research on Strategy & Corporate Finance topics and synthesizing the results
- Serving as point of contact for the S&CF practice, answering the requests from multiple intake channels
- Undergraduate degree; postgraduate degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related fields preferred
- 1+ years of relevant working experience in corporate finance or related areas such as financial analysis and modeling
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong proficiency in Excel and Power Point; understanding of statistics/analytics is a plus, but not required
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and quantitative skills, as well as curiosity and a passion for research interest in the corporate finance domain with intermediate/advanced content knowledge
- Strong people and team-orientation skills
- Ability to work under pressure and deliver on tight deadlines
