Job Summary

Under general supervision, and following established procedures, performs a variety of technical ultrasound procedures on pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, using standard, portable, and / or specialized equipment in order to provide information for physicians for the diagnosis and treatment of patients' illness and injuries. Performs related tasks such as positioning patients for correct anatomical views, maintaining order and cleanliness of work area, and performing routine clerical tasks. May be required to rotate on-call with other Ultrasound technical staff.

Essential Functions

  • Explain the ultrasound procedure to patients and answer any questions they may have.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment and sterilize the room in which the procedure takes place.
  • Spread the ultrasound gel on the surface of the patient's body covering the internal area being imaged.
  • Perform the ultrasound ensuring the transducer (probe) is capturing images of every angle / section that must be assessed.
  • Evaluate the images for their quality, but also to interpret what was captured in the image.
  • Present images and preliminary findings to physicians and the healthcare team.
  • Maintain patient records and add medical notes related to the ultrasound procedure

Minimum Education / Certifications

High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) approved certificate program in ultrasonography.

Licensure : Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) Certified

BLS-CPR by American Heart Association (AHA).

Minimum Work Experience

At least two year of experience as an in acute care setting.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work : Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed

Physical Demands :

  • Requires frequent moving through all areas of the Radiology Department at various sites, including off-site locations.
  • Work requires standing for extended periods in order to perform radiologic procedures. Frequent bending and stooping required.
  • Good manual dexterity in order to handle instrument and equipment.
  • Must be able to lift, position or transfer a patient with assistance.
  • Work requires constant-standing; walking; frequent-stooping, bending, stretching, lifting, positioning, pulling, pushing, turning.
  • Frequently lifts or moves objects, (i.e., cassettes, portable, etc.).
  • Occasionally moves with assistance, patient or objects greater than 150 lbs., occasionally carries objects weighing up to 150 lbs. and frequently pushes objects up to 200 lbs.
  • May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
  • Occasionally occupational exposure to Ionizing Radiation Safety Procedures are observed.
  • Requires sitting and working at a CRT for extend periods.
  • Occasional-Activity or condition exits up to 1 / 3 of the time.
  • Frequent-Activity or condition exits 1 / 3 to 2 / 3 of the time.
  • Constant- Activity or condition exits 2 / 3 of the time or more
