The New Mexico Department of Health's mission is "To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico." The New Mexico Environmental Public Health Tracking Program is within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau in the Center for Health Protection under the Public Health Division in NMDOH. The CDC-funded Tracking Program brings together health and environmental data from various sources and provides supporting information to make the data easier to understand. The NM Tracking portal has data and information on environmental hazards and health effects.
Why does the job exist?
This position will work closely with Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program team members to : expand collaboration among environmental health stakeholders; identify and execute evidence-based interventions; produce and disseminate environmental public health messaging and materials, especially through the NM Tracking portal; develop, implement, and evaluate health initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of environmental health outcomes throughout the state; and ensure grant deliverables and reports are on schedule. The incumbent will also provide EHEB on-call services one to two days a month and support other bureau initiatives such as legislative bill analysis, and public health urgencies.
How does it get done?
Key responsibilities of this position include planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental health activities, using a variety of evidence-based programs and initiatives that reduce the burden of environmental health outcomes, such as heat-related illness. The incumbent will coordinate program efforts to expand and maintain partnerships, implement effective evidence-based programming, and develop communication messages, materials, and campaigns. The incumbent will also coordinate the New Mexico Climate and Health Adaptation Work Group (CHAWG).

This job is done to promote awareness and increase access to environmental health data and information among internal and external epidemiologists and public health practitioners and leadership, academic researchers and students, health care practitioners and administrators, policy makers, and the public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in :
1. Public health principles, theories, and approaches (such as coursework, degree, or previous work in health education, community health, public health, environmental health, or health communications).
2. Health communications : includes advanced writing skills for a variety of audiences, including report writing and creation of tailored educational materials, use of health communication theories and models, and an understanding of health literacy practices.
3. Managing and supporting grants.
4. Community and partnership development, engagement, and sustainability.
5. Locating and using public health data and other relevant resources to support public health initiatives and use of logic models for program planning.
6. Grant applications, grant reporting, and working with federal partners (such as CDC, SAMHSA, HRSA, NOAA, etc.)
Minimum Qualification
Associate's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Family Studies / Services, Social Sciences, or Human Services and one (1) year of experience as a social work assistant and / or in social or community coordination, working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work / case management experience, and / or behavioral health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
