NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded in 1901 and now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST is one of the nation's oldest physical science laboratories. Congress established the agency to remove a major challenge to U.S. industrial competitiveness at the time-a second-rate measurement infrastructure that lagged behind the capabilities of the United Kingdom, Germany, and other economic rivals. From the smart electric power grid and electronic health records to atomic clocks, advanced nanomaterials, and computer chips, innumerable products and services rely in some way on technology, measurement, and standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Today, NIST measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations-from nanoscale devices so tiny that tens of thousands can fit on the end of a single human hair up to earthquake-resistant skyscrapers and global communication networks. REQUIREMENTS (duties include but are not limited to) NIST is looking for an occupational audiologist on a part-time basis for about 1 day per week or 32 hours per month. Schedule can be flexible, but 1 day per week is desirable. Performs audiometric testing and evaluation for employees, who have reached a standard threshold shift (STS) and require re-testing as per OSHA guidelines. Including : Review problem audiograms and compare with baseline and later audiograms. Performs medical investigations into possible causes for employee hearing loss and makes work-relatedness determinations, to include : Review the employee's occupational and non-occupational exposure history to noise, ototoxins, and the use of hearing protection devices (HPDs). Judge the likely contribution of occupational exposure. Determine if an STS is recordable or reportable to regulatory agencies. Counsels and advises employees regarding hearing loss and / or conservation efforts. Establishes policies for adequate testing and appropriate use of audiometric and hearing-related questionnaire information. Reviews audiograms. Provides advice and guidance to the Hearing Protection Program Manager within the Safety, Health, and Environment Division. Provides advice and guidance to NIST management on Hearing Conservation efforts. Ensures audiometric testing equipment is functioning properly. Provides training to employees regarding hearing loss and its prevention. QUALIFICATIONS Must have either an Audiology Ph.D. or Au.D. from an American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) accredited Program. Must be certified by the American Board of Audiology (ABA) or hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Must be certified as a Professional Supervisor through the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation. Must have at least three (3) years of recent experience in occupational hearing conservation.
