Description:
The Medical Assistant’s primary obligation is to assist the provider with all medical-related functions to enhance patient care and simplify physician workload. These duties include but are not limited to prepping patient charts/ histories, rooming patients, aiding during exams, maintaining the daily schedule, stocking and cleaning exam rooms, ensuring that medical instruments are sterile, perform laundry duties, and following OSHA and HIPAA guidelines. At times the medical assistant will also take on reception duties by calling, scheduling, rescheduling and canceling patient appointments. They are also knowledgeable with basic state disability guidelines, insurance information, medical terminology, and both CPT and ICD-10 codes, to properly associate with orders. They relay all pertinent information to the physician and always use the utmost professionalism and customer service skills.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITIES
MEDICAL ASSISTANT
- Knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR), assisting MD/NP with creating notes for patient exams.
- Ensures patient service exceeds expectations.
- Maintains supply stocking of exam and procedure rooms
- Reviews and coordinates daily appointment schedule and prepares exam rooms.
- Knowledge of how to schedule appointments and procedures.
- Monitors physician schedules and authorizes add-on patients.
- Prepares medical charts for the next day/ day of. Updates pertinent medical history and results for proper review and evaluation of the clinician.
- Escorts patients into exam rooms, takes patient vitals with appropriate medical history (weight, height, BP, smoking and alcohol history, last pap, mammogram, etc).
- Follow ASCCP and/ or ACOG cytology guidelines for provider.
- Confirms reason for appointment, anticipates provider needs for proper assessment, treatment, or intervention.
- Logs and utilizes inventory module for all consumable items: injections, IUD devices, medication, etc.
- Gives injections (if certified), performs urine dip stick testing for urinalysis and pregnancy.
- Assists physicians during procedures as needed.
- Logs-in specimens and prepares for pick-up.
- Completes requisition orders as required (blood work, pathology, sonograms).
- Contacts laboratories, radiology department or online login for results as needed.
- Cleans and maintains accurate log of instruments and autoclave (twice daily).
- Prepares exam room for future appointments; makes sure exam rooms are left cleaned and stocked, ready for the next day.
- Maintains and stocks sample closet. Discards expired medications.
- Clean exam rooms daily of read magazines and dirty laundry.
- Notes items to be reordered and notifies the appropriate person.
- Knowledgeable with state disability procedures.
- Write letters for patients on behalf of their physician for their medical condition (as needed).
- Check personal task list, email, and CureMD inbox for physician & colleague requests.
- Maintain Emergency Kits
- Maintains physician workstation daily – clean out basket at end of each day.
- Scan pertinent information into EMR as needed and in a timely manner (no more than 3 days).
- Schedule NSTs, inductions, and versions for patients as needed.
- Schedule appointments and procedures for patients when need arises.
- Helps with unpacking and organization of supplies, maintain lab and ensuite restroom.
- Helps ensure that office area is neat and tidy along with personal work area, including being free from food, drinks or other consumable items.
- Assists in areas of office where needed (scanning, shredding, laundry kitchen cleans, MD writing stations, sample closet upkeep, lab area, other common areas.)
- Keep the daily flow of the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Inform patients in waiting room if provider is running behind. Notify front desk as needed.
MINOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIITES
Sit with new hires, getting them acquainted to CureMD, lab websites, office layout and lab items.
Maintain and organize medical supplies per exam room, main storage area and laboratory
Weekly rotation of community area maintenance: laundry, kitchen, storage, and personal spaces.
Requirements:
Education:
High School Diploma
Some College Recommended
Medical Assisting Certification a plus
Experience:
High level of back-office support and administrative skills. Must communicate effectively,
professionally, patiently, and kindly with patients, physicians, and staff. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and office fundamentals are needed to complete tasks.
Computer Skills:
Intermediate to advanced computer skills: data entry, word processing, MS Office, CureMD, Excel, Google Suite and Docusign a plus.
Language Skills:
Must be able to speak and write proper grammatical English, Bi-lingual a plus
Time Management/ Organizational Skills:
Must be highly organized and can effectively prioritize and manage time
Problem Solving:
Ability to resolve issues with a positive and decisive manner. Must be able to communicate effectively and work as a team player with other staff.
Physical Requirements:
Multi-limb and eye-hand coordination
Able to bend, stoop and lift boxes up to 20 lbs.
Fast pace / multi-tasking with organization and efficiency
Able to sit at a des, working on computers and phones for part of the workday
Able to stand on feet for approximately 75% of the day
