Public Works Road And Traffic Maintenance
This is a non-exempt position which requires semi-skilled manual work in the performance of light and heavy manual labor of more than average difficulty in the construction, landscaping, maintenance, and repair of properties and grounds for various municipal departments of the City of Plantation.
An employee in this classification is responsible for the performance of a wide variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks, and may require some acquired skills in the use of hand tools and power tools. Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Performs semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, painting, and asphalt tasks in performing general maintenance of municipal buildings, equipment, and property.
Ability to operate heavy equipment. (i.e., loader, backhoe, roller etc.)
Understanding the layout and installation of asphalt driveway aprons and roadways
Supervises and manages personnel of lower classifications.
Assists higher-level tradesmen in the accomplishment of varied skilled trade projects.
Ability to complete daily Work Orders assigned to crew.
Mixes concrete and replaces and repairs sidewalks throughout the city and digs, grades, and sets forms for concrete work and tamps and levels concrete.
Utilize road saws, concrete grinder, jack hammers and chainsaws along with variety power tools and hand tools.
Install new and old road signs, erect barricades, and repair breaks and holes in street surfaces.
Performs miscellaneous pick-ups and deliveries of errands as required.
Exercises care and safety in use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the city.
Executes purchase orders authorized by the supervisor and / or department director.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, lift and / or carry and push / pull various objects.
Knowledge of cleaning methods and skilled in the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
Knowledge of methods and tools used in cement finishing and asphalt laying as position requires.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices
Skill in written (learning the work order process) and verbal communication.
Skill in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evenings, as required.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, other city departments, fellow employees, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public.
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 1 year of experience in ground, street, and / or landscape maintenance or construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Valid State of Florida CDL driver's license or obtain within time table set by Public Works Director.
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment and requires travel from site to site. This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
