Description

Under general direction, compounds and dispenses pharmaceutical preparations and supplies for patients of the Ventura County Medical Center / Santa Paula Hospital Oncology Infusion Pharmacy; completes tasks related to the evaluation of patient drug therapy.

An ideal candidate for this position is highly specialized and knowledgeable in Oncology Pharmacy. The Oncologist Pharmacist incumbent will have considerable oncology inpatient and / or outpatient infusion center experience, as well as experience with sterile and non-sterile compounding of non-hazardous and hazardous medication.

PAYROLL TITLE : Pharmacist – Specialty Care

EDUCATIONAL / BILINGUAL INCENTIVE : Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular, (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this and similar vacancies within the Ventura County Health Care Agency. There is currently one (1) Regular, Full-Time vacancy within the Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center and / or Santa Paula Hospital.

Pharmacist - Specialty Care is represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following :

Lead assigned patient service lines, clinical area, and therapeutic programs as an active member of multidisciplinary team and collaborates with healthcare providers.

Perform patient assessments and monitor the effects of drug therapy using clinical symptoms, evaluating laboratory data, and other relevant clinical diagnostic techniques.

Critically analyzes, evaluates, and prepares recommendations of medical literature in relation to medication therapy.

Designs and implements stewardship activities and restriction / surveillance programs.

Tracks and evaluates assigned pharmacy programs for operational, quality, and financial efficiency and routinely benchmarks against local and national best practices.

Actively identifies practice related issues which require evaluation, facilitate clinical research projects, quality improvement initiatives, or develop and administer healthcare provider educations; summarizes results of evaluation / projects and submit recommendations to the Pharmacy Director and / or Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Assists in establishing drug monographs for formulary assessment.

Develops and oversees policies and procedures for drug purchasing, usage, distribution, and control including specialty medication.

Assures pharmacy is an integral part of the health-care delivery system and facilitates enhancement and expansion of pharmacy services / programs.

Participates in performance improvement activities including drug utilization evaluation.

Facilitates experiential education and practice advancement by maintaining proficiency in receptor roles and emulates education / mentorship skills.

May dispense medication and perform duties as a Pharmacist as necessary.

Perform other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education / Experience

• Pharmaceutical degree (Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy) from an accredited school of pharmacy or its equivalent

AND

A combination of three (3) years of experience as an inpatient staff pharmacist with exposure to chemotherapy, OR

one (1) year of specialized clinical pharmacy experience in inpatient oncology or outpatient infusion center OR

successful completion of a pharmacy residency program in clinical pharmacy.

Necessary Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current valid license as a Pharmacist in the State of California.

Physical ability requirement : must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Thorough knowledge of :

prescription filling activities;

sterile and non-sterile compounding;

sterile compounding of non-hazardous and hazardous medication;

pharmacology and pathophysiology related to management of oncology / hematology patients;

professional standards and practices; and

Federal, State Board of Pharmacy, The Joint Commission and Department of Public Health laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to patient care.

Working ability to : operate a computer;

perform pharmaceutical mathematical calculations;

research, read, interpret medical and pharmacy literature;

communicate clearly and effectively;

review and verify medication orders accurately and timely through electronic health record;

use aseptic technique for non-sterile and sterile compounding of non-hazardous and hazardous medications;

supervise pharmacy technicians, and

work cooperatively with other staff and health care providers.
