Role and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the PSOE Controller oversees the Organization’s accounting function and liaises between executive management and the finance and accounting teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following :
Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
Manage a staff of 3-5 bookkeepers / staff accountants.
Manage the Organization’s treasury management efforts.
Keep the relevant staff informed about upcoming deadlines and deliverables, thereby ensuring a smooth completion of work responsibilities.
Collaborate with CFO to ensure successful execution of grant process, including submitting applications, ensuring deadlines are met, managing grant budgets, and complying with grant agreements.
Review accounting data for accuracy and compliance with SBOA. Reconcile accounts to detail. Determine required general ledger entries.
Collaborate with CFO in preparing the Organization’s annual budget.
Support the month-end and year-end close process.
Assist the CFO in implementing a new accounting software.
Seek out ways to improve financial processes. Demonstrate a desire to improve quality, speed, and efficiency.
Participate in meetings, as needed, to provide progress reports and receive instructions.
Prepare work papers and provide information that supports the annual financial audit.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
The Controller will be thoroughly committed to the PSOE mission and vision of the Finance Team. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include :
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field. Education-related finance experience is highly valued
CPA license is required with at least 5 years of overall combined accounting and finance experience is required
Proven prior experience in managing high-functioning teams is required
Prior experience with school and / or non-profit grants management and finance is preferred
Prior experience implementing accounting software is preferred
Ability to interpret complex grant funding requirements, submissions, and budget projections
Possess good knowledge of planning and strategizing financial and budgeting issues
Strong command of written and verbal communication
Ability to learn industry-specific software
Ability to work in a task-driven environment
Exceptional attention to accuracy and detail
Excellent organizational and proactive problem-solving skills
Must be a team player with the ability to work independently
