DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Dean of Undergraduate Education and with a dotted line to Organizational Transformation (OT), the Director of Student Services and Community Engagement for the UC San Diego - Chula Vista program supports advocacy, community building, and education for UC San Diego - Chula Vista students who transfer from Southwestern College and ensures coordination across UC San Diego, multiple school districts, and community organization stakeholders. Incumbent substantially collaborates with partners at UC San Diego, Southwestern College, and the broader Chula Vista / South Bay community. Works with staff and faculty in academic departments (including the School of Public Health for the inaugural program offering), Colleges, Enrollment Management, and VC OT to help operationalize the program. Provides continual assessment, recommendations, and strategic leadership for student services and community engagement as additional degree programs are created. Serves as the liaison to and partners with the student support units of VC OT, particularly the Student Success and Retention programs and the Raza Resource Centro, to build inclusive and supportive communities and programs for UC San Diego - Chula Vista students.

The Director holds overall responsibility for the program's community outreach, sustaining partnerships with Southwestern College and Chula Vista, while cultivating new relationships. These partners may include Southwestern College faculty, staff, and administrators, Sweetwater Union School District, parents and families, and Chula Vista employers and community members. Leads student career development initiatives and collaborates with community partners to identify future opportunities.

This position is located physically in the University Center on Southwestern College's campus in Chula Vista. Supervises UC San Diego staff and serves as a back-up for delivering direct student services. The team will maintain constant physical presence in Chula Vista and collaborate with external institution partners in the University Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Advanced degree preferred.

Five or more years of relevant experience related to college student services and outreach : admissions, financial aid, college counseling, career development, or student retention and success preferred.

Experience working with community college populations and supervising professional staff is preferred.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated expertise in building and maintaining high-level partnerships across diverse internal and external organizations (e.g., faculty, senior management, community leaders, binational partners). Proven track record of successful cross-cultural communication, consensus-building, and conflict resolution necessary to advance complex, multi-stakeholder programs.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in creating a climate of trust and respect and in aligning strategic initiatives and operational goals with the mission, values and business needs of the institution.

Demonstrated ability to supervise professional staff, fostering innovation, service, and accountability. Excellent ability to delegate and assign tasks, monitor production and quality of work, set clear and reasonable performance standards, and develop staff to their highest potential.

Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Advanced knowledge of common computer applications programs : Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of social media.

Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures. Demonstrated data management experience. Proven skill in collecting and reporting within multiple database / information systems. Ability to develop and maintain precise organized records, files, and filing systems, and attention to detail. Advanced knowledge and understanding of UC, and the ability to interpret and communicate policies and procedures to prospective students and the public. Knowledge about other campus programs and partners, especially any others involved in the work of student outreach.

Advanced analytical / problem-solving skills. Demonstrated experience in managerial and administrative practices and principles; strong and creative organization, analytic, and decision-making / problem-solving skills. Ability to develop innovative approaches, techniques and procedures to provide more efficient and responsive services.

Demonstrated knowledge of the intersections of identities (including but not limited to : race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background) and how they impact student development and student success, retention, engagement and readiness.

Advanced ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations, and other institutions.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This position requires attendance at, and participation in, an array of student activities and community programs, which may occur on evenings and weekends.

Must have access to reliable transportation. Position is expected to travel to campus and various off-site locations within San Diego 2-3 times per week.

This position shares office space in Southwestern College's University Center. A hybrid work schedule is available but flexibility is crucial.

Fluency in English and Spanish preferred.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $42.15 - $77.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
