The Freight Handler loads, unloads, and transports freight within or near terminal, yard, or work site. Critical job functions include reading work orders or following oral instructions to determine materials or containers to be moved. The Freight Handler loads and unloads freight and counts onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves. They load freight into vehicles and install blocking, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit. They transport freight from storage dock areas or trailers to designated areas. The Freight Handler secures lifting attachments to freight and conveys loads to destinations. They attach identifying tags or labels to freight or mark information on cases, bales, pallets, and other shipping packages. They stack or assemble freight into bundles and band bundles together on pallets. The Freight Handler cleans work areas, machines, and equipment to assist machine operators. They operate industrial trucks or electric hoists to assist in loading or moving materials and products. They participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
Job requirements include a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of educational experience. The Freight Handler relies on written and verbal communication. They must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. They should be able to write routine correspondence. They communicate internally with operations and dock supervisors. The Freight Handler must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units or measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. They must have forklift driver qualification and hazardous material training. They must be able to display good judgment in solving problems and dealing with a variety of personalities where only limited structure exists. They must be able to prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Physical demands and work environment include standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 80 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to moving vehicles, outside weather conditions, and vibrations. They are occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high precarious places, and extreme temperatures. The noise level in the work area is usually moderate to high.
