Position Overview and Responsibilities :

In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected, at all times, to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of conduct, as well as any and all departmental and / or work until rules, directives, policies, procedures, and / or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

This is a highly technical and licensed in Florida Professional Geologist II position in the Waste Cleanup Program, Site Investigations Section (SIS).  The incumbent is responsible for geological oversight in SIS for conducting soil, surface and ground water contamination investigations throughout the State of Florida. Primary responsibility is the planning, design, and management of geologic projects related to the investigation and assessment of soil, surface and groundwater contamination. The incumbent will also serve as a Project Manager for numerous Site Investigation projects. Overnight, out-of-town travel is frequent and necessary.  Participation in the Department’s medical monitoring program and OSHA safety training for subsequent authorization for on-site work at hazardous waste disposal sites is required.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following :

  • Research and review current and historical site information as it pertains to geological procedures.
  • Select appropriate analytical methods for sample analyses.
  • Monitor well design, placement, installation and sampling.
  • Coordinate buried utility clearance and procurement of required permits.
  • Collect geologic, hydrogeologic, geophysical, chemical and biological data.
  • Review and interpret geologic, hydrogeologic and geophysical chemical, data.
  • Review Site Assessment Work Plans (SAWPs), Site Assessment Reports, Groundwater Monitoring Reports, and seal reports as a Professional Geologist (when required).
  • Summarize data and produce a technical report which identifies violations and recommends corrective action.
  • Provides mentorship and leads training events for internal staff and external entities.
  • Assist with special projects at the request of the supervisor
  • Duties include the coordination and geological assessment activities of site access with SIS personnel, DEP district personnel, DEP Office of General Counsel, DEP Environmental Crimes Unit, other interested agencies and the affected parties.
  • Represent the Department at public meetings and workshops.  Provide technical presentations and training to DEP personnel and other interested agencies. Provide expert witness testimony at court hearings, trials and public meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, chemistry, Florida’s groundwater, drilling methods and other subsurface investigation techniques, and monitor well construction, Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative.
  • Skills in GIS software, Excel and other hydrogeological and analytical software applications.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and a variety of technical software associated with ground water assessment activities.
  • Ability to write technical reports, work with the public, and other personnel and coordinate multi-discipline activities.
  • Ability to be physically able to perform field work.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and apply appropriate rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork and training.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • At least four years of verifiable related experience in engineering, environmental science or natural sciences. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science or one of the natural sciences may be used as an alternative for the required four years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • OSHA Safety Training successfully completed within 12 months of employment.
  • Travel is required.
  • Participate in the Medical Monitoring program.
  • Position of Special Trust Requirement :

    The incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, Florida Statutes and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigations, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.

    Applicable Job-Specific License or Certifications :

    Must possess current State of Florida Professional Geologist License (Chapter 492 F.S.).

    Preferred Qualifications :

    One (1) year of post registration experience.

    Pay :

    Annual Salary : $57,457.57 - $72,000.00 (Commensurate with experience).
