Job Summary
The Associate Mechanical Engineer performs professional-level mechanical and process engineering work supporting complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Reporting to a Senior Engineer this role involves hands-on design technical analysis project planning and coordination within a multidisciplinary engineering environment. Assignments focus on mechanical and instrumentation systems across treatment facilities pumping plants pipelines hydropower facilities buildings and related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical and Process Design
- Conduct site investigations and collaborate with internal stakeholders
- Prepare mechanical and process design drawings specifications and calculations
- Design and analyze systems such as pumps piping valves chemical systems HVAC plumbing and mechanical equipment
- Perform engineering analyses including hydraulic analysis pump and valve sizing and ventilation calculations
Computer Software Applications
Use 2D and 3D computer-aided design tools for mechanical and process designApply engineering software for scheduling hydraulic modeling and spreadsheet-based economic and technical analysesTechnical Support
Respond to requests for field inspections evaluations and engineering calculationsProvide technical support to engineering operations and maintenance teamsReview contractor and vendor submittals for technical complianceProject Planning and Management
Define project objectives scope cost estimates feasibility and schedulesCoordinate project resources and prepare supporting documentationSupport project development control and interdisciplinary coordinationWritten Communication
Prepare clear and accurate engineering reports memoranda and correspondenceCommunicate technical information to diverse audiences including engineers operations staff agencies and the publicOral Communication
Participate in and lead meetingsPresent technical proposals reports and recommendations to a wide range of stakeholdersQualifications
Bachelors degree in an ABET-accredited mechanical or related engineering program or a California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificateFour years of professional mechanical or related engineering experience following degree completionActive California Professional Mechanical Engineer (PE) licenseValid drivers license with a satisfactory driving recordAbility to perform field inspections and site work requiring physical agilityWillingness to work overtime as neededEquivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered when supported by documented evidence demonstrating the required level of responsibility and technical expertise.
