Position Summary
The Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for promoting and enforcing Cannon's safety culture on Federal projects. This role requires excellent communication skills, strong leadership, autonomous decision-making, and deep knowledge of regulatory compliance and construction safety practices.
Requirements
- Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety
- Safety Professional Certification (must be SSHO-certified)
- OSHA 30-hour certification (OSHA 40 preferred)
- Current Washington State driver's license
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in a safety-related field
- USACE EM 385-1-1 certification or ability to obtain (required for many federal sites)
- Ability to obtain and maintain federal job site access (may include background checks)
- First Aid / CPR / AED Certification (or ability to obtain)
- Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug screening
Qualifications
Strong knowledge of construction operations, safety principles, and best practicesExperience conducting incident investigations, fact-finding, and writing detailed reportsExperience presenting Safety, Health, and Wellness programs to large groupsFamiliarity with risk assessment methodologies (JSA / JHA, hazard analysis, mitigation planning)Experience networking with safety or utility industry organizationsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work effectively across all organizational levelsAbility to work autonomously, exercise judgment, and be solutions-orientedAbility to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and prioritiesProficiency with safety management software (e.g., KPA, HCSS Safety, SafetyCulture / iAuditor, SiteDocs)Experience with root-cause analysis tools (5-Why, Fishbone / Ishikawa, preferred)Experience developing and delivering safety trainingPreferred Credentials : CHST, ASP, CSP, or other professional safety certificationsExperience working on federal, government, or military construction sites (preferred)Responsibilities
Lead, implement, and support safety initiatives and cultural improvements across all job sitesProvide safety guidance and technical expertise to supervisors and managersEnsure compliance with OSHA, L&I, USACE EM 385-1-1, and other governing agenciesConduct investigations of safety incidents, evaluate hazards, and develop corrective actionsAnalyze work practices and develop safety and health standards to meet federal and state regulationsPlan, coordinate, and deliver safety training programsConduct job site inspections and audits, documenting findings and follow-up actionsMaintain strong working relationships with regulatory and compliance agenciesUtilize digital safety tools for reporting, documentation, and communicationPrepare and maintain required compliance records, logs, and reporting documentationPhysical Requirements
