The District currently has one vacancy for 5.75 hours per day, 9 months per school year. The examination process will consist of supplemental questions within the application, a qualifications appraisal interview followed by a selection interview for those candidates in the top three ranks on the eligibility list. The eligibility list that is being established will be used to fill the current vacancy, for future vacancies, and to hire substitutes for the classification of Health Care LVN within one year.

BASIC POSITION INFORMATION

Under direct supervision of the District Nurse and general supervision of the Director of Special Education, meets health needs of students requiring special services complying with health care plans directed by physicians; complies with laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent; provides appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students under the supervision and direction of the District nurse; performs related duties as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
• Implements nursing procedures applicable to individual students. E
• Administers medications and specialized medical treatment as indicated by the student's physician (including but not limited to through injection), which could include administration of seizure medication rectally. E
• Initiates emergency procedures related to seizure disorders, allergic reactions, or as otherwise required. E
• Monitors medical needs of students and takes appropriate action to ensure students' health and safety. E
• Performs specialized health care services for students including but not limited to toileting assistance, diapering, catheterization, tube feeding, ostomy care, tracheotomy care and suctioning, monitoring students on oxygen and ventilators, and blood glucose monitoring. E
• Operates a variety of medical equipment including but not limited to, electronic thermometer, stethoscope, otoscope, suction machine, catheterization equipment, gastrostomy feeding tubes, respiratory inhaler, etc. E
• Provides emergency medical care in the event of serious illness or accident, including but not limited to first aid and CPR. E
• Assists with the implementation of student health care procedures and protocols, such as assessment of classroom environments for safety and hygiene. E
• Maintains student health records, reports, and medical orders; assists with medical documentation and billing procedures. E
• Assists with the conduct of state-mandated screenings. E
• Lifts and positions physically disabled students as needed. E
• Assists with training staff on specialized healthcare procedures ordered by a physician. E
• Assists with maintaining orders for daily medications and emergency supplies of medications. E
• Maintains professional competence through continuing education coursework.
• Travels to schools within the District to perform duties.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:
Nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice.

Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including record-keeping and report preparation.

Effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques.
Emergency crisis management techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Appropriate safety and hygiene standards.

Ability to:
Perform medical procedures within the scope of practice including but not limited to administering injections, seizure medication, etc.
Monitor students' health status and health-related issues such as diabetes care and seizure monitoring.
Administer First Aid and CPR as needed.
Recognize and effectively respond to emergency and/or hazardous conditions.
Deal with stressful situations in a calm, professional manner.
Observe health and safety regulations, including universal precautions.
Perform physically demanding work in safely lifting, transferring, and assisting non-ambulatory students.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm, and receptive attitude toward students.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, parents, and District staff.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and with students in a clear concise manner appropriate to their stage of development.
Problem solve to identify issues and create action plans.
Compile and maintain accurate written records.
Maintain confidentiality of all records related to assigned activities.
Make accurate mathematical calculations.
Operate a computer and assign software.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Education:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by a Licensed Vocational Nurse course of instruction.

Experience:
Two years experience providing personal care to disabled persons or working in a health care service environment; experience working with school-aged children is highly desirable.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
Possession of a valid First Aid and CPR certificate; valid California Vocational Nurse's License; valid California Class C Driver's License and auto insurance coverage which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement at the time of appointment and throughout employment; use of a personal automobile to travel within District.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Incumbents in this class work primarily inside with direct contact with students, staff and the public.
Work with continuous interruptions and changing priorities.
Responds to emergency medical situations.
Drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time; have mobility to walk, kneel, crouch, stoop/bend repeatedly.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance.
Ability to use both hands and legs simultaneously, to reach overhead, pull hand over hand, and use fingers repetitively twisting or applying pressure with wrists or hands.
Must have rapid mental/muscular coordination; maintain balance; have depth perception and ability to see to read small print and distinguish shades.
Dexterity of hands and fingers needed to operate a variety of specialized health care equipment, adaptive tools for lifting heavy students (such as a Hoyer lift), and a computer keyboard.
Must speak clearly and hear normal voice conversation; ability to use telephone and a computer.
Must be physically able to provide rapid response to emergent situations throughout the school campus.

Hazards:
Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals, occasionally parents or staff members.
Exposure to blood and other bodily fluids.
Moderate to loud noise.
Potential for contact with bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases.
Body odors.

APPOINTMENT

In accordance with Education Code Section 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months during which time an employee must demonstrate at least an overall satisfactory performance. Failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination.
Holidays
Up to 16 paid holidays per year depending on months worked for all regular classified employees. Holidays are prorated for all classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per school year.

Vacation
Paid vacation is prorated for all regular classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per school year. Below is the vacation schedule for classified staff and classified management. For the purpose of vacation, a "month of service" is defined as fifteen (15) or more calendar days of paid status in any one calendar month.

1-5 years of service - One day of vacation will be earned per month of service.

6-10 years of service - One and one-quarter (1.25) days of vacation will be earned per month of service.

11-15 years of service - One and one-half (1.5) days of vacation will be earned per month of service.

16-19 years of service - One and one-sixth (1.6) days of vacation will be earned per month of service.

20-24 years of service - One and three-quarter (1.75) days of vacation will be earned per month of service.

25 + years of service - Two (2) days of vacation will be earned per month of service.

Health and Welfare Benefits

Medical Benefits - For full-time classified employees working 40 hours per week, the District will pay 100% of the premium of the least expensive family medical insurance plan (for the employee and eligible dependents). For classified employees whose assignment is less than full time, but 30 hours per week or more, the District will pay a proration of the premium payment for the medical insurance plan based on the hours per week of the position.

Dental Benefits - For classified employees working 30 hours per week or more, the District will pay 100% of the premium for dental benefits for the employee and eligible dependents.

Vision Benefits - For classified employees working 30 hours per week or more, the District will pay up to 100% of the premium for vision benefits for the employee and eligible dependents, depending on which plan is selected by the employee.

Life Insurance Benefits
For classified employees working 15 hours per week or more, the District will pay 100% of the premium for life insurance coverage for the employee of $35,000 ($50,000 for confidential and classified management employees).

The following benefit providers are available for enrollment for eligible classified employees:

*Medical: Health Net HMO/Select

*Dental: Delta Dental (PPO) or DeltaCare USA (HMO)

*Vision: Vision Service Plan (VSP) or Safeguard Vision

*Out of pocket costs are dependent on which provider is selected.

Retirement
The District participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Lifetime retirement benefits are provided for eligible retirees. Classified employees working 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in CalPERS (employees make a mandatory 8% contribution).

Paid Sick Leave
All regular classified employees earn paid sick leave based on one day for each month in which such employees are in a paid status with the District and is prorated on the hours and months worked per school year. For example, employees working 12 months per year will normally earn twelve (12) days of sick leave during each school year. Earned, but unused sick leave can accumulate without limit.

Salary Step Increments
Regular classified employees receive a step increase of 2.5% annually based on their service in the District. Longevity increments of 5% additional salary are granted at the beginning of the 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th year of service in the District, which are cumulative.
