Vocal Instructor

As a vocal instructor, you will assist undergraduate and graduate students and performance ensembles with stage, film, studio recording projectsin developing a healthy and professional singing technique through studio classes and workshops. Quarter preparation involves designing warm-ups, exercises, and content development for up to 30 students in musical theater classes, audition preparations for students and professionals, ensemble performances, concerts, productions, studio classes, and vocal workshops. Throughout the quarter, you will conduct weekly, hour-long, one-on-one lessons starting in the second week and culminating in a voice recital in week 10. You will also collaborate with the head of vocal instruction to create and review vocal assessment materials and conduct voice lesson audition assessments during the first week of each quarter. Together with leadership, you will plan studio class offerings, recital learning targets, themes, and logistics.

In this role, you will create a supportive environment for students to participate in functional voice training and artistic exploration essential for singer-actors and recording artists. Among other duties, you will keep attendance records, support acting students at the Atlanta location who seek individual virtual instruction, and provide critical feedback to students. You will support students' vocal needs during breaks through lessons, coaching, and vocal health checks, and you will enhance students’ technical growth through science-based vocal pedagogy, repertoire choices, and constructive feedback.

Each December, you will support the head of vocal instruction with vocal training and performance preparation for the Bee Sharps, the university’s premier student vocal ensemble, as well as preparation for auditions and competitions. You will also handle health check-ins, musicianship training, and studio class/group vocal workshops. Additionally, you will develop repertoire selections for students returning in the winter quarter and manage the digital presence of the SCAD Virtual Voice Instructor, which helps students maintain vocal health and progress between terms. Among other duties, you will curate and deliver an off-term vocal program for each student to ensure their progress continues over winter break.

The successful candidate demonstrates extensive knowledge of musical theater, including repertory, performances, vocal styles, and an understanding of vocal anatomy. They should also have knowledge in voice science and be able to address vocal health and function with practical application to musical theater, commercial music, and classical singing.

Minimum qualifications:

• Master’s degree in music, vocal pedagogy, musical theater, vocal performance, or a related field, with at least three years of professional experience in vocal instruction
• Professional experience as a musical theater performer or classical/opera singer demonstrated through curriculum vitae and/or professional résumé
• Piano skills for assisting or accompanying lessons

Preferred qualifications:

• Certified in vocology

Travel required:

• Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
