Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a Registered Environmental Health Specialist to ensure code compliance and support a wide range of environmental health programs on campus, including food protection, potable water quality, pool safety, and vector control. Reporting to the Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Manager, this position plays a key role in protecting the health and safety of the campus community while providing lead work direction to one Assistant Environmental Health Specialist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Oversight & Compliance : Conduct inspections, monitor compliance, and ensure adherence to state, federal, and local regulations governing food safety, potable water, recreational waters, and vector control. Provide inspection findings, recommendations, and follow-up actions to campus auxiliaries and vendors.
  • Team Leadership : Provide daily lead work direction and mentorship to one Assistant Environmental Health Specialist, supporting professional growth and ensuring high-quality program delivery.
  • Collaboration & Training : Partner with Environmental Health & Safety staff to develop policies, procedures, and training that promote compliance and best management practices across campus operations.
  • Campus Partnerships : Maintain strong working relationships with campus auxiliaries, vendors, and stakeholders to foster a culture of health, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assessment & Reporting : Support efforts to evaluate campus compliance with environmental health and safety regulations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives through reporting and documentation.

    Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent / probationary position.
  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8 : 00am to 4 : 30pm, but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
  • Department Summary

    Environment Health and Safety is responsible for development and implementation of programs aimed at protecting the campus community and providing compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes. This department reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs.

    Education and Experience

    Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for year basis.

    Key Qualifications

  • Implements and assists with developing environmental health and safety strategies, initiatives, and procedures that align with industry regulations to promote a safe and healthy environment.
  • Conducts inspections and risk assessments of university facilities, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and risks; documents findings and creates EHS corrective action plans to address any identified issues.
  • Investigates incidents, accidents, and near-misses to identify root causes. Documents findings, recommends EHS corrective actions, and monitors implementation.
  • Monitors changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards relevant to environmental health and safety, assesses the impact of these changes on programs.
  • In collaboration with management, develops updated policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Reports on environmental health and safety activities, utilizing established monitoring mechanisms to provide updates on metrics, trends, and issues to university leadership and regulatory agencies when requested.
  • Conducts evaluations of existing environmental health and safety programs to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provides lead work direction and trains staff and student employees as appropriate.
  • Licenses / Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire .
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) : Current Certificate as an REHS from the State of California, Department of Public Health (CDPH).

    Compensation :

    Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 15 ($7,754) for highly qualified candidates.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range : $5,877 – $8,561 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
