Position Overview

Position title : Assistant or Associate Professor in French, focusing on Francophone African literature / film and / or culture whose primary research focus lies south of the Maghreb.

Salary range : $80,800–$128,700 for an Assistant Professor (9‑month academic year) and $99,600–$149,500 for an Associate Professor (9‑month academic year). Off‑scale salary and additional compensation are offered to remain competitive.

Anticipated start date : July 1, 2026.

Location : Berkeley, California.

Responsibilities

The role requires

• Teaching undergraduate courses and graduate seminars across a range of French and Francophone studies, with emphasis on literary, film, and cultural analysis.
• Conducting a rigorous, publishable research program in Francophone African studies, demonstrating both depth and breadth in the field.
• Providing inclusive and supportive mentorship to students at all levels, ensuring equitable success.
• Engaging in departmental service and contributing to the broader academic community.
