Payroll Specialist

Payroll Specialist (Contract-to-Hire) Location : Downtown Houston, TX 100% Onsite Pay Range : $27.00$38.00 per hour (Based on Experience)

Robert Half is working with a rapidly growing company in downtown Houston to find a skilled Payroll Specialist for a contract-to-hire position. This onsite role is ideal for a payroll professional who is passionate about accuracy, compliance, and delivering excellent service in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly and weekly payroll for hourly, salaried, and exempt employees using payroll software.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state payroll tax laws, including accurate and timely submission of payroll taxes.
  • Maintain and update payroll records, including employee changes, benefits contributions, deductions, wage garnishments, and direct deposit details.
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries and address any discrepancies or adjustments with urgency and professionalism.
  • Reconcile payroll transactions to the general ledger and assist with payroll-related journal entries.
  • Prepare and issue W-2s and other payroll-related documentation in adherence to year-end reporting requirements.
  • Support audits by providing payroll records and other requested documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes that enhance efficiency without sacrificing accuracy.

Requirements

  • Experience : At least 3 years of hands-on payroll experience, including processing large volume payrolls.
  • Education : High school diploma is required; an associate degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration is preferred. CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) credentials are a plus.
  • Technical Skills : Proficiency with leading payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paycom, Workday) and strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and complex formulas.
  • Knowledge : In-depth understanding of payroll laws and regulations, including familiarity with multi-state payroll processing.
  • Soft Skills : Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, along with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Attention to Detail : Must demonstrate strong organization, accuracy, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
