About the team and position
Join Carvana's Verification Technology team as a Senior Data Engineer and take ownership of building and optimizing the data infrastructure that powers our operations. The Verification Technology team supports both customer-facing websites and internal tools used to review and approve vehicle orders prior to delivery.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with Engineering, Analytics, and Product Management to design scalable data architectures and pipelines that align with business needs. By crafting intuitive, well-structured data systems, you'll empower analysts to surface actionable insights while ensuring seamless integration across teams. With a proactive mindset and a focus on delivering impactful solutions, you'll play a key role in shaping Carvana's data-driven future.
What you'll be doing
Use Snowflake to develop and maintain robust and scalable Enterprise-level data pipelines with SQL / NoSQL data wrangling.Leverage generative AI and intelligent coding assistants to accelerate development, optimize team workflows, and assist in troubleshooting.Move and shape structured and semi-structured data between various data platforms, including Snowflake, MS SQL Server (2022), Kafka, AWS S3, Azure DataLake, Azure Blob, Cosmo DB and Azure SQL DBProvide design feedback to software development teams, ensuring transactional data structures meet the requirements of downstream analyticsAssist in the migration of legacy workloads / code from SQL Server to Snowflake, converting T-SQL and python to Snow SQL and SnowparkAssist with SQL and Snowflake performance troubleshooting and query tuningPlan project deadlines, coordinating with multiple teams and provide updates to leadershipUtilize version control and deployment pipelines, preferably with Azure ADO with Git or GitHub and GitHub ActionsLead complex projects characterized by diverse scope and high complexity, requiring significant collaboration across multiple teamsLead team design sessions and code reviewsEngaging with cross-functional project teams involving data scientists, product engineers, and analysts to achieve common objectives.Work with end users and other IT teams to resolve operational issues and mitigate risks as applicableWhat you should know
You have 5 years of experience with distributed data processing on cloud and have exposure to at least one of the major cloud providers (AWS / Azure / GCP)You have 5 years of experience working with SQL and relational databasesFamiliarity with using Python for basic to advanced data processing tasksYou have a strong understanding of data integration concepts, business intelligence, data warehousing and working with large datasetYou have expertise on the Snowflake data platformYou have worked with and feel comfortable with MS SQL Server and DatabricksYou know what a query plan is and how to view oneYou have solid understanding of indexing and data pruning conceptsYou are excited for performance tuning and process streamlining (woo!)You actively keep up with industry best practicesYou're a forward thinker; you will predict how future company evolution will affect processes implemented todayYou are highly self-directed and autonomous, but seek guidance and support when necessaryYou enjoy mentoring and supporting colleaguesYou practice excellent written and verbal communicationYour attitude rocksBonus :Familiarity with python on Spark or DatabricksExperience implementing data pipelines using internal and third-party APIs utilizing python, secrets and tokens for secure accessYou have experience using Agentic AI workflows with the top models (Claude, GPT, etc.)What we'll offer in return
