Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Teach Communication Studies and related courses to a diverse student population. Courses include, but are not limited to, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Intercultural Communication, Argumentation and Debate, and courses in the support of the Forensics Program.

Serve as Director of Forensics, as assigned.

Share responsibilities in the Forensics Program, including teaching and related activities, as assigned.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program.

Participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods, modalities and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Maintain distance education certification and compliance.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and / or are students who are historically underserved.

The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American. Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted student populations.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and / or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication

Bachelor’s in any of the above

Master’s in drama / theater arts, mass communication, or English

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience teaching Communication Studies in person to underserved student populations in high school, community college, or other higher education settings.

Experience in teaching argumentation and / or coaching policy or parliamentary debate.

Experience in coaching competitive intercollegiate individual events (platform, limited preparation, and / or interpretation of literature).

Successful experience in recruitment, coaching, and coordination of a forensics program.

An educational philosophy that emphasizes student learning.

Experience teaching a range of Communication Studies courses, including Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Intercultural Communication, Argumentation and Debate, and courses in support of a Forensics Program.

Demonstrated ability to apply current theories, methods and modalities of teaching Communication Studies.

Demonstrated ability to teach students of diverse learning styles, levels of preparation, and backgrounds.

Evidence of service to educational institutions, contributions to the profession, and / or professional development in the discipline.

Demonstrated interest in the design and assessment of curriculum and student learning outcomes.

Demonstrated experience or ability to create equitable outcomes and success for all students, including the ability to effectively engage the college’s diverse student population and the ability to address equity, inclusion and diversity issues in the Communication Studies classroom.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

Salary Range :

85,541 - $128,379 Annually

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS SUMMARY

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable. The candidate selected for employment will be required to provide the following : official transcripts and verification of experience prior to the first duty day, identification and employment eligibility as outlined in the Immigration Reform and Control Act, fingerprints and required medical certification pursuant to statue. NOCCCD will not sponsor any visa applications.

The District may choose to fill one or more positions from this recruitment within eight (8) months.
