Primary Purpose : PRIMARY PURPOSE

This position is responsible for administering first aid and preventive and rehabilitative treatment to student-athletes involved in various inter-collegiate sports; and maintaining and operating the campus training room clinic.

Job Description : JOB DESCRIPTION

Work Term :

August 2025-June 2026 (max 26hrs weekly) with Potential Contract Renewal : July 2026-June 2027 for an allocated 38.5wks / 26hrs max per week. Hours are not guaranteed. Substitute options are also available.

There are 10 positions open to be filled for 2025-2026; potential for rehire for the next academic year, 2026-2027.

Schedule :

  • As needed and coordinated with Co-Head ATCs
  • Potential for contract renewal for fiscal year July 2026-June 2027.
  • Unpaid lunch.

Salary :

Professional Expert; Starting pay range, $35.00 per hour

Job Duties :

Administers emergency first aid to student athletes; performs orthopedic evaluations / assessments of injuries to formulate a clinical diagnosis by interpreting the information obtained during the history and physical evaluation. Establish a treatment plan of care based on the clinical diagnosis and evidence-based practice, refers injured student athletes to a physician according to established procedures.

Creates and implements rehabilitative exercises to student athletes; administers a variety of therapeutic equipment such as whirlpool, ultrasound, therapeutic exercise and other modalities; informs coaches of condition and status of injured athletes. Designs therapeutic exercise programs to address strength, flexibility and functional movement deficits as well as reduce the risk of injuries. Recommends protective equipment for injury protection and safety.

Facilitates pre-season intercollegiate health screening and injured student athlete clearances prior to and during sport season.

Provides medical coverage for athletic events, administers emergency first aid treatment; and applies prophylactic taping techniques for various musculoskeletal injures before, during and after practice or games.

Maintains and operates the athletic training facility. Cleans therapeutic equipment. Facilitates the maintenance and calibration of therapeutic modalities and equipment; Responsible for inventory management and equipment / supply orders as needed.

Selects, designs and fits safety padding and other devices; monitors safety factors on playing areas, addressing hazards as needed.

Trains and provides work direction and guidance to others as directed. Athletic therapists are responsible for choosing and supervising health care and medical team, including the selection of team physicians, hourly athletic trainers, volunteers, interns, etc.

Provides education to student athletes regarding injury care, prevention and treatment programs. Recognize and monitor mental health, nutrition, and other general health and wellbeing issues student athletes may be experiencing and refer to appropriate professionals for intervention as needed.

Perform all aspects of health care administration including maintaining and reviewing Policy and Procedure manual, medical records, emergency action plan, filing insurance claims, scheduling health care appointments, and ensure open lines of collaboration and communication with health care professionals and athletic staff.

Learns and applies evidence-based practice to curate student athlete centered care. . Research current methods of treatment and oversee maintenance of required certifications and staff continuing education.

Participate in District / College efforts to increase the diversity of faculty and staff and to address student achievement gaps; active assistance in the creation of a welcoming and inclusive work and educational environment; attend and participate in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and events. Contribute to the development of an environment for student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and inclusive and follows the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) cultural competency initiatives.

Facilitate individual and group safety by monitoring and responding to environmental conditions (e.g. weather, surfaces and work setting).

Performs related duties as assigned.

Working Relationships :

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Athletic Therapist maintains frequent contact with student athletes, physicians, physical therapists, co- workers and vendors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of symptoms and treatment for athletic injuries

Knowledge of evidence-based techniques of preventive and rehabilitative treatment used in athletics

Knowledge of the principles of physiology, kinesiology anatomy and first aid

Knowledge and familiarity of equipment, materials and supplies used in team and individual sports

Knowledge of physical fitness, hygiene and safety procedures related to athletic and exercise programs, including taping, bandaging and exercise rehabilitation techniques

Knowledge of record keeping techniques

Knowledge and adherence of NATA Code of Ethics

Ability to evaluate and treat a variety of athletic and school-related injuries

Ability to administer advanced first aid

Ability to operate a variety of therapeutic modalities andexercise equipment

Ability to apply prophylactic taping techniques and apply protective devices and pads

Ability to maintain comprehensive records of injury management

Ability to manage inventory and maintain supplies and equipment

Ability to understand various modalities used in injury rehabilitation

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions

Ability to communicate, both verbal and in writing

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Special Requirements :

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid California Driver’s License
  • CPR Certification issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • Athletic Trainer Certified Credential through the Board of Certification and maintenance of state practice laws
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training ( once hired )
  • Minimum Qualifications :

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college required, including courses in Health, Human Anatomy, Kinesiology / Biomechanics, Human Physiology, Physiology of Exercise, and Athletic Training.

    Current NATABOC registration and / or certification (BOC up-to-date).

    Sufficient related training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities listed.

    Desirable Qualifications :

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    Master’s Degree from an accredited college.

    Completion of a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

    Prior experience in approaching work and interactions with colleagues and / or students in an equity minded manner. Ability to provide an inclusive and welcoming work / educational environment.

    Working Conditions : WORKING CONDITIONS

    Indoor and outdoor athletic and physical education environment; subject to inclement weather and traveling to athletic games; exposure to blood, various cleaning agents including bleach; sharp objects, scissors, scalpels, knives, lifting (up to 50 pounds unassisted), standing, bending, walking and running.
