JOB SUMMARY
This is a responsible non-supervisory position. Incumbent performs all duties within guidelines provided by Program Director and other policies and procedures, such as the Authorized Driver Handbook. Duties include operating and maintaining transportation vehicles with a focus on safety and client courtesy; performing daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; performing minor maintenance tasks on the vehicles when necessary; fueling the vehicles; ensuring that periodic scheduled vehicle maintenance is completed and reported; documenting client usage; preparing trip reports; preparing accident and incident reports as necessary; assisting client in and out of the vehicle as needed; providing safety briefing to clients ; and providing other services as requested by management when not engaged in transportation service.

- Operates assigned vehicle in a safe and courteous manner.
- Maintains defensive driving.
- Provides a communication link between clients and staff, and between program where clients reside and program to which client is being transported including relaying information, delivering paperwork, etc.
- Assists clients, in and out of the vehicle as necessary; operates ramps, lifts and securement devices as needed.
- Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route service for clients or as instructed by supervisor, and reads and interprets road signs in English.
- Presents safety briefing to passengers prior to each trip departure.
- Keeps the assigned vehicle(s) clean inside and outside.
- Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on trip sheets, client transportation forms, vehicle maintenance, fuel purchases, incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition reports and other records that are requested by management.
- Performs minor maintenance tasks on assigned vehicle(s) as required.
- Fuels the assigned vehicle(s).
- Coordinates the schedule for major or periodic vehicle maintenance with management and staff to minimize service interruptions.
- Responds immediately to accident or medical emergencies by notifying emergency response providers.
- May provide (if instructed by supervisor) clients with peer counseling.
- Serves as a positive role model while providing transportation service.
- Attends all required training, including any assigned safety and safe driver courses.
- Performs other job-related duties that may be assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question.Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried (if any) and any special handling required.Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required.Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off transport vehicles if necessary.Must have the ability to comprehend and follow simple instructions verbally and communicate in English.QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED. Candidates must possess a clean New York State driver license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Candidates may be required to possess the appropriate level CDL Class A, B, C or General Class D license. Maintenance of a clean valid NYS driver’s license is a requirement for continuing employment.
