2026 Co-Op, Platform and TA Bioinformatics

The Role

The Bioinformatics Co-op will support Modernas Research and Technology Development teams in applying Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing for characterization of RNA and DNA.

This role is designed for a student eager to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge long-read sequencing analyses contribute to reproducible workflows and help shape emerging bioinformatics processes.

While the position will be primarily focused on Technology Development you will also gain exposure to Platform and Therapeutic Area projects learning how ONT data is used across the discovery and development pipeline for mRNA medicines.

Heres What Youll Do

Perform hands-on ONT sequencing data analyses including basecalling alignment quality control and visualization.

Build and maintain Jupyter notebook workflows to streamline analysis and reporting.

Assist in developing prototype pipelines for ONT data processing as processes become formalized.

Collaborate with wet-lab scientists to understand experimental context and provide feedback based on data analysis.

Document workflows organize datasets and contribute to best practices for reproducibility.

Present findings and progress to the team in clear and accessible ways.

Support additional cross-functional projects as opportunities arise.

Heres What Youll Need (Basic Qualifications)

Enrollment in a Bachelors Masters or Doctoral program in Bioinformatics Computational Biology Computer Science or a related field.

Coursework or prior experience with NGS data analysis; familiarity with ONT data a plus.

Proficiency in Python (and optionally R) programming language.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Curiosity and willingness to learn new tools methods and sequencing technologies.

Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with diverse teams.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

Practical experience analyzing ONT data (e.g. basecalling demultiplexing alignment QC).

Experience with software development practices such as version control (e.g. GitHub) documentation and testing.

Familiarity with cloud computing (e.g. AWS) or high-performance computing environments (e.g. LSF SLURM).

Interest in learning how bioinformatics supports the development of mRNA medicines.

Location-specific perks and extras

The salary range for this role is $20.00 - $60.00. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An individuals position within the salary range will be based on several factors including but not limited to specific competencies relevant education qualifications certifications experience skills performance and business or organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus other incentive compensation or equity award subject to company plan eligibility criteria and individual performance.
