The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and provide education to taxpayers.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to :

• Analysis and review of taxpayer returns for proper preparation, accuracy and compliance with Vermont tax laws and regulations
• Prepare tax assessments and adjustments to bring taxpayer into compliance (as appropriate)
• Respond to and work with taxpayers and / or their representatives
• Play an active role in taxpayer appeals and / or settlements
• May act as a lead examiner, training and assisting other examiners with inquiries and questions
• Perform other duties as required

The hourly salary rate for this position ranges from $23.76 to $36.98, and State of Vermont benefits are very competitive. The annualized salary for this position ranges from approximately $49,420.80 to $76,918.40. The salary range reflects the minimum and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade, and the annualized salary figure is calculated based on 2080 hours of annual compensation and does not include authorized overtime or other compensation. It also doesn't include any time taken off payroll. The starting salary for this position may be negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.

As of July 14, 2025, the step 1 rate for pay grade 21 will be $24.59 per hour.

The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff. Background Checks This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Some routine data entry may be required in certain positions or for certain periods. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. Incumbent will likely encounter stressful situations and differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives. There is regular pressure from continual work deadlines.

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) AND one (1) year or more of experience with accounting, finance, or business administration.

OR

Associate's degree or higher with courses in accounting, finance, business administration, taxation AND two (2) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

One (1) year or more as a Tax Examiner II.
