Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance

This position functions as a skilled laborer responsible for maintaining grounds and plants in assigned county areas, including mowing, trimming, cultivating, and caring for shrubs, trees, plants, and turfgrass. The role requires determining proper care and treatment while operating small to heavy equipment such as commercial mowers, weed eaters, edgers, leaf blowers, sprayers, dump trucks, trailers, and tractors. Work is performed under the direction of the Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and / or Operations Specialist, with guidance from the Grounds Maintenance Technician II (Crew Leader / Foreman). Examples of duties include sowing, transplanting, fertilizing, and applying water to the plants, turf or plant collection; installing new plant material following plans and / or approved horticultural / grounds practices and procedures; maintaining flower beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and spraying of plant material; and participating in the application of herbicides, insecticides, and other chemicals that may be applied to turf or plant collection.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of grounds keeping and landscape equipment, parts and supplies, cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees, and plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and ground maintenance are also required. Ability to observe plants, identify plants and plant problems, assess condition and health of plants, operate heavy equipment, follow oral and written instructions, and develop good working relationships with co-workers is necessary.
Conditions of employment include driving as an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire. Successful candidates must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures.
