POSITION SUMMARY The Piano Instructor is responsible for organizing and executing piano lessons for all participants in this program. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Teach the fundamentals of piano, basic tactics, strategies and techniques one on one.
- Follow basic instruction and adhere to our values and mission.
- Must have a reliable source of transportation and ability to commute, with consistent availability during the after-school hours of 4 pm - 8 pm one day per week.
- Teach piano to students in a fun and engaging way.
- Create an enjoyable and safe environment for children to learn and have fun.
- Maintain accurate attendance records.
- Ensure strategic objectives are being met.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory authority over employees but is responsible for supervising all children while participating in the program.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE. Less than high school education; or up to one-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Related experience must include knowing the rules and how to play the game of chess, prior experience working with children, experience managing a classroom and creating lesson plans and demonstrated customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Reading, math, reasoning ability. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Soft Skills. Ability to communicate with all socio-economic levels present in the community. Ability to interact effectively with children, parents and co-workers. Ability to be flexible with changing needs of the program and community. Ability to mediate and resolve conflict between employees, or participants.
- Physical Requirements. The incumbent will occasionally need to sit and stoop. They must regularly use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The incumbent in the position must occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities needed for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Environment. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
- Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood borne pathogen training required after hire and must remain current. List other licenses, certificates, or registrations that are required to perform the essential duties of this job.
