Job Overview

The role of the Group Sales Manager is to develop and implement sales and marketing strategies to maximize room revenue and other ancillary revenue. The role requires an in depth understanding of the hotel industry, the local lodging market and the drivers of room night revenue and room night demand. A key function of the Sales Manager’s role is to develop client relationships and convert group sales contracts. The Sales Manager will be required to ensure room revenue goals are achieved, sales and marketing strategies are set, tactical plans are created and implemented, and results are monitored and achieved. This position does require travel to conferences and tradeshows as well as attendance at local networking events. Given the Group Sales Manager will be responsible for making significant financial decisions for the property in a sales capacity, he / she is expected to act with integrity, honesty and transparency when making sales calls, booking group revenue and preparing / executing sales contracts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Your responsibilities are diverse in nature and include, but are not limited to :

  • Achieve budgeted revenues and personal / team sales goals and maximize profitability.
  • Create and implement sales plans (SMART Plans) that drive measurable occupancy, increase average room rates, increase volume, food and beverage and banquet sales.
  • Complete activities including, but not limited to, telemarketing, prospecting and qualifying potential leads, soliciting viable leads, and preparing and presenting written proposals / contracts and oral presentations.
  • Review monthly and weekly reports and sales forecasts to analyze current / potential market and sales trends, coordinate activities to increase revenue and market share and monitor performance to ensure actual sales meet or exceed established revenue plan.
  • Assist in developing revenue management decisions including participation on weekly revenue management calls with brand partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key clients and outside contacts (example : guests, airliners, wholesalers, travel agencies, ad agencies, local community groups) to produce group and / or convention business, to include room sales, food and beverage sales, and catering / banquet services.
  • Provide guests with information (example : loyalty programs, area attractions, restaurants, destination management companies facility information) to enhance guest experience.
  • Schedule travel, sales trips, conventions and / or business group activities at the hotel or other venues and coordinate with other hotel-level departments to facilitate services agreed upon by the sales office and prospective clients.
  • Communicate to appropriate departments all pertinent information requirements and special needs for arriving VIP’s, large groups, and other key guests.
  • Analyze competition, market trends and customer needs to continually assess the productivity against established goals.
  • Strategically evaluate and determine the revenue potential of clients compared to the established goals of the hotel to ensure profitability. Develop a sales strategy by analyzing historical, current and future hotel / market trends to capture the maximum amount of revenue and meet / exceed his / her individual sales goals.
  • Manage account details so all pertinent aspect of solicitation and closing are complete and documented.
  • Assist with marketing efforts to upsell guests on hotel services, offerings and amenities.
  • Develop awareness and reputation of the hotel and the brand in the local community.

Accountability

The Group Sales Manager will report directly to the Director of Sales and indirectly to the General Manager. Primary duties will include making sales and obtaining contracts for room night stays at the property from various groups of customers. Primary duties will include customarily engaging in sales calls and events outside of the property. The Sales Manager will exercise extreme discretion and judgement with respect to matters of significance including revenue management, room sales and other key financial decisions. Other duties include performance of non-manual work related to the hospitality and service operations of the business.

Qualifications and Requirements

Only candidates with a minimum of three years of demonstrated success in hospitality or hotel sales and marketing, combined with equivalent experience in sales, marketing, or a related discipline, will be considered. Strong knowledge of local businesses and business trends required. Must speak local language(s). Other languages preferred. The Sales Manager will be required to make weekly sales calls offsite from the hotel property. This position will also require access to a personal telephone in case of emergency or offsite need and access to internet for email communication.
