About The Role
At Weights & Biases, our Platform Engineering organization powers the tools and systems used by ML practitioners to build, train, and scale cutting‑edge models. As Director of Engineering, Platform, you’ll lead a number of mission‑critical teams, driving strategy and execution across four cross‑functional engineering groups, partnering with product, infrastructure, and customer‑facing teams.
The Metrics Team – building high‑performance APIs to ingest and query training metrics, logs, files, and artifacts that are central to model development.
The Identity Team – securing the platform through authentication, authorization, and audit capabilities critical to enterprise‑grade ML workflows.
The SDK Team – providing scalable, portable, and developer‑friendly client libraries to integrate seamlessly into training pipelines and ML stacks.
The Billing Engineering Team – ensuring accurate usage metering, entitlement enforcement, and seamless integration with pricing and payment systems.
Your work will enable our product and ML infrastructure teams to move faster, while ensuring reliability, scalability, and security across all layers of the platform.
Who You Are
10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years in a senior engineering leadership role.
Experience building and leading teams focused on platform engineering, infrastructure, or backend systems in a cloud‑native SaaS environment.
Deep technical expertise in building scalable APIs, SDKs, or core services used in production environments.
Strong understanding of model training workflows or ML infrastructure and how platform engineering supports ML velocity.
Familiarity with authentication protocols (e.g., OIDC, OAuth2), identity architecture, and audit requirements for enterprise security.
Experience designing metering systems, entitlements enforcement, and billing infrastructure.
Track record of hiring and mentoring senior engineers and engineering managers across diverse technical domains.
Preferred
Prior experience at a company delivering ML platforms or developer tools.
Familiarity with ML training frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and their integration needs.
Experience with platform reliability, observability, and developer tooling for high‑scale systems.
Knowledge of billing systems such as Stripe or usage‑based pricing infrastructure.
Exposure to enterprise compliance frameworks like SOC2, GDPR, or ISO 27001.

Base salary range : $206,000 to $303,000. Starting salary determined based on job‑related skills and market location. Total rewards include a discretionary bonus, equity awards, and a comprehensive benefits program.

We prioritize a hybrid work environment; remote work may be considered for candidates located more than 30 miles from an office, based on role requirements for specialized skill sets.
