Oncology Nurse Practitioner
Day Shift : M-F (or 4 10 hour days) - Weekend call requirement on a rotating basis - Outpatient
Summary
The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specializing in comprehensive cancer care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The ONP collaborates with supervising physicians to manage hematology-oncology patients and follows established treatment protocols. This role requires professionalism, clear communication, and strong collaboration skills. The ONP will manage a dynamic clinic environment, addressing needs ranging from primary care to complex chemotherapy side effect management.
Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Triage calls from patients, physicians, hospitals, and agencies; escalate to physicians as needed
- Evaluate and treat acute conditions including oncologic emergencies and chemotherapy side effects
- Conduct histories, physical exams, diagnostic assessments, and initiate treatment plans
- Manage follow-up visits and adjust care plans based on patient progress
- Identify environmental and personal risk factors; coordinate care with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary teams
- Refer patients to specialists when care exceeds scope
Education and Collaboration
Educate patients and families on chemotherapy and treatment plansProvide clinical education to office staffCollaborate with physicians to develop and review medical protocolsServe as a resource for staff and participate in oncology-related committeesProcedures and Rounding
Assist with chemotherapy preparation, administration, and supervisionSupport office-based medical proceduresProvide first-call coverage and participate in hospital roundsAct as inpatient point-of-contact for the oncology teamDocumentation and Compliance
Maintain accurate and timely medical recordsDocument assessments, plans, and visit findingsReview and update policies and procedures periodicallyAdhere to safety standards and complete required annual educationEmergency Response
Act as first responder to infusion-related emergencies or adverse reactionsAdditional Duties

Education
No specific degree required; must meet licensing and certification standardsExperience
No minimum experience requiredLicensure and Certification
Certification by ANA or AANP as Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse PractitionerMust meet Tennessee state requirements for Nurse PractitionersOncology Nursing Society certification preferred
