Summary

This Position is located in the Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) Facilities Services Directorate (FSD) Facilities Operations and Services Division (FOSD). The incumbent serves as an Electronics Mechanic (Fire Alarm). The work centers around maintenance repair and modification of a central fire alarm system comprised of various types of signaling equipment. Work is performed in accordance with all applicable codes schematics and instructions from supervisors.

Duties

This is a Direct Hire Public Notice under this recruitment applications will be accepted for each location and / or installation identified in this Public Notice and selections are made for vacancies as they occur. This position is being filled under Direct Hire Authority (DHA) in accordance with Section 1109 of FY 2020 NDAA; P.L. 116-92 and Section 9905 of Title 5 U.S.C. ( Section 9905 of Title 5 U.S.C.)

Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following :

  • Preventative maintenance repairing analyzing configuring testing and troubleshooting a highly complex Fire Alarm system (SIMPLEX).
  • Responds to requests about specific and immediate Fire Alarm systems problems relating to system controls and component failure.
  • Ensures that the latest applications are applied to avoid future operational problems and assists in resolving technical disputes and problems with contractors regarding facilities interconnecting the Pentagon building and Fire Alarm systems.
  • Performs diagnostic activities to assess the overall system operations.
  • Locate and repair defects at the component level including power supplies amplifiers signal generators multiplexing devices computer-based central processing units and vox units.
  • Proficient in printed circuit board repair at the component level including knowledge of operating principles of transformers diodes capacitors relays Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) transistors microprocessors and integrated circuits.
  • Repairs replaces installs and modifies fire detection and suppression systems smoke and heat detection devices and all indicating and activation devices in everyday use.

  • This position requires wearing a uniform in the performance of duties.
  • The incumbent is required to wear protective equipment i.e. arc flash rated suit tyvek suits and respirators while working in hazardous areas.
  • This position requires the employee to work rotating shifts weekends overtime holidays and may be subject to call 24 hours a day.
  • This position may require up to 10% occasional travel away from your normal duty station for official business on military or commercial aircraft.
  • This position is MISSION ESSENTIAL. Mission essential employees may be required to report for or remain at work in dismissal or closure situations due to adverse weather or other emergencies unless specifically excused by their supervisor.
  • Qualifications

    In order to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements described below.

    The Federal Wage System Job Grading Standard for Electronics Mechanic 2604 outlines the individual occupational requirements for this series. These requirements include knowledge of electronic principles the ability to recognize improper operation locate the cause and determine the best method to correct the defect. The skill to disassemble assemble and adjust electronic equipment is also required. The work may involve using both manual and automated test equipment and may require the use of a personal computer and software packages to program or realign components or systems download information and detect equipment deficiencies

    You may qualify at the WG-5 level if you fulfill the following qualification requirement :

    I have experience that demonstrates my ability to perform very simple maintenance and troubleshooting tasks repair and modification of a central fire alarm system comprised of various types of signaling equipment. Familiarity with basic electronic systems with little to no experience required with specific systems like SIMPLEX GRINNELL. Able to follow simple instructions for tasks such as replacing parts conducting routine checks and reporting system status to senior technicians. Some ability to read simple diagrams and follow basic blueprints but detailed instructions are provided for most tasks. Limited or no use of diagnostic tools independently instead assisting senior staff with basic tasks.

    You may qualify at the WG-8 level if you fulfill the following qualification requirement :

    I have experience that demonstrates my ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting tasks repair and modification of a central fire alarm system comprised of various types of signaling equipment. General familiarity with fire alarm systems and electronic components but limited experience with complex systems. Basic understanding of electronic equipment operation and the ability to follow simple troubleshooting steps under supervision. Capable of reading basic blueprints and diagrams but with more reliance on instructions and guidance from senior personnel. Some exposure to using diagnostic tools and computers for system checks but typically only for straightforward tasks or under supervision. Primarily focused on routine tasks and assisting with more complex operations.

    You may qualify at the WG-10 level if you fulfill the following qualification requirement :

    I have experience that demonstrates my ability to perform mid-level maintenance and troubleshooting tasks repair and modification of a central fire alarm system comprised of various types of signaling equipment. Working knowledge of fire alarm systems including SIMPLEX GRINNELL or similar systems is preferred but not required. Basic understanding of electronic equipment operation and the ability to perform straightforward troubleshooting tasks. Able to read and follow basic blueprints diagrams and specifications with some assistance for more complex systems. Competent in using basic diagnostic tools and computers for system analysis though under supervision or with technical guidance. Focuses more on routine maintenance and repair with less emphasis on advanced or specialized diagnostics.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
