Shift : 1st Shift, Full-Time, 40 hrs / week
We are hiring an experienced Sheet Metal Fitter Journeyperson in Norfolk, VA to perform shipboard and shop-based sheet metal repairs, fabrication, and installations. The Sheet Metal Fitter Journeyperson role requires advanced layout ability, fabrication skills, blueprint interpretation, and hands-on installation of habitability, ventilation, and structural components across naval and commercial vessels.
Responsibilities
- Plan, layout, fabricate, assemble, and install various sheet metal structures in accordance with drawings, sketches, and specifications.
- Perform repairs and installations in habitability spaces, berthing areas, galleys, ventilation systems, and joiner components.
- Conduct pre-production inspections, take measurements, mark removal boundaries, and create templates for replacement pieces.
- Remove and install equipment, ducting, furniture, and structural components as required.
- Fabricate using shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, routers, and various hand / power tools.
- Tack weld using SMAW or GMAW for structural assembly and installation.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, and prepare surfaces; weld, solder, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk, or bond materials.
- Generate OQE documentation and comprehensive Condition Found Reports (CFRs).
- Direct and support helpers / improvers, and maintain safe work practices including Lock-Out Tag-Out.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas across all stages of the shift.
Requirements
Minimum 6 years of sheet metal experience, with at least 3 years in a maritime environment.Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, sketches, specifications, and standards (NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard).Strong knowledge of ship repair terminology and compartment nomenclature.Experience installing berthing equipment, galley equipment, ducting, joiner doors, and habitability components.Understanding of air system balancing, including reading and documenting airflow readings.Proficiency with sheet metal tools, fabrication equipment, and welding processes.Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals (US and metric).Must be physically capable of wearing all OSHA-required PPE.Must have active DBIDS.Must pass required screenings and comply with company nondiscrimination and safety policies.Benefits
