Fire Protection Designer (5+ Years Experience)
Position Summary
The Fire Protection Designer is responsible for producing complete, accurate, and compliant fire protection system designs for commercial, industrial, government, and institutional facilities. This role requires advanced technical knowledge, strong coordination skills, and the ability to independently manage design deliverables from concept through construction. The designer will work closely with engineers, architects, clients, and contractors to ensure all fire protection systems meet project requirements, code standards, and life-safety objectives.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop detailed fire protection system layouts, including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and special hazard systems using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
• Prepare design drawings, specifications, and calculations in compliance with NFPA, IBC, IFC, and local codes.
• Perform hydraulic calculations and pipe sizing for sprinkler systems.
• Produce fire alarm system design documents including device layouts, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and voltage drop calculations.
• Support design for special hazard systems (clean agent, foam, water mist, etc.) when required.
• Coordinate with internal engineering disciplines to ensure design integration.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
• Review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and product data for compliance.
• Interpret and apply relevant codes and standards including NFPA, IBC, IFC, and FM Global.
• Conduct field verification, existing conditions assessments, and site surveys.
• Ensure all designs adhere to company quality standards and project timelines.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal oversight.
• Assist in preparing project budgets, schedules, and scope documents.
• Participate in project meetings and client presentations.
Qualifications
• Minimum 5+ years of fire protection design experience.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
• Strong knowledge of NFPA codes, IBC, IFC, and local regulations.
• Experience performing hydraulic calculations (HAAS, HydraCalc, or equivalent).
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently.
Preferred:
• NICET Level II or III in Sprinkler and/or Fire Alarm design.
• Experience with special hazard systems.
• Experience with government or high-hazard industrial projects.
• Degree in engineering, drafting, or related technical field.
