Controller

We're seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to join a long-established commercial and industrial electrical contracting company. This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial operations, including payroll, compliance, reporting, and strategy. The ideal candidate has recent, direct experience in construction payroll, prevailing wage, and labor compliance and thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. This is a full-time, exempt role based onsite in Escondido, Monday through Friday from approximately 7 : 00 AM to 3 : 30 PM, with additional hours as needed. Candidate must reside in North County San Diego or be able to commute daily to Escondido. Key Responsibilities Oversee all accounting and finance operations, including monthly reporting, reconciliations, and compliance Ensure GAAP compliance and maintain internal financial controls Oversee and ensure accuracy of weekly payroll processing, including state and federal prevailing wage requirements, wage determinations, certified payroll reporting, fringe benefits, and training contributions Manage labor compliance functions for prevailing wage projects and subcontractors Collaborate with HR and Operations to align labor reporting, workforce planning, and compliance tracking Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes Manage job-cost tracking, WIP schedules, and adjustments Coordinate audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting Supervise and mentor accounting / payroll team members, ensuring timely and accurate work Oversee insurance, benefits, and fringe reporting; identify and resolve discrepancies Maintain asset management records and support annual reviews Perform additional duties as needed to support overall business objectives What We're Looking For Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field Minimum 5 years of recent construction accounting experience, including hands-on prevailing wage and labor compliance Strong understanding of certified payroll, wage determinations, fringe benefits, training contributions, and related compliance reporting Experience managing and mentoring accounting / payroll personnel Proficient in reconciliation, job costing, AR / AP, and WIP reporting Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage confidential information with discretion Effective communicator capable of collaborating across multiple departments Must pass background and drug screening; professional references required Must reside in or be able to commute daily to North County San Diego (Escondido area) Schedule : Full-time, on-site, MondayFriday, 7 : 00 AM 3 : 30 PM (additional hours as needed) Pay & Benefits Salary Range : $110,000 $160,000 / year (DOE) PTO & Paid Holidays Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance 401(k) with Company Match Professional Development Opportunities Long-term stability with a well-established and respected team Why Work With Us For over 30 years, our family-owned company has built strong, lasting partnerships throughout Southern California.
