Maintenance Worker

Incumbent serves as Part-time Maintenance Worker for the Hamilton County Airport Authority, responsible for assisting in maintaining and repairing facilities, grounds and equipment at the Indianapolis Executive Airport and the Sheridan Airport.

Duties :

  • Performs general groundskeeping of the airports, including maintaining airport equipment and removing weeds and snow.
  • Monitoring interior and exterior lighting daily and replaces bulbs and ballasts as needed, including applicable airfield lighting. Repairing interior and exterior electrical as assigned, such as repairing, replacing or installing motors, pumps, fixtures, security locks, fuses, garage doors and wiring.
  • Performing preventive maintenance for all systems and equipment, such as cleaning, oiling / lubricating, maintaining fluid levels, adjusting controls, replacing belts, and repairing items as scheduled or assigned.
  • Maintaining environmental comfort system, including operating computer-based digital management system, analyzing and maintaining appropriate environmental system chemical.
  • Maintaining fresh-water delivery and sanitary waste systems, including cleaning and maintaining stormwater collection / diversion system, and maintaining salt in water softener.
  • Performing plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets and fixtures, unclogging toilet and sink drains, replacing valves, and repairing leaks as assigned.
  • Assists in constructing, repairing and painting structural and aesthetic building components as assigned.
  • Maintains communication with Director of Airports regarding projects, and repair supplies and parts as needed, including maintaining detailed records regarding maintenance activity as required.
  • Assists contractors in accessing facilities as needed.
  • Makes recommendations for new equipment, building upgrades, and major repairs as needed.
  • Serves on 24-hour call for emergencies.
  • Attends training to maintain current knowledge of relevant technology and methods as requested.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge :

  • High school diploma or HSE minimum of one (1) year of experience in commercial construction and / or public facility maintenance, or closely related field.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to assist in maintaining various mechanical systems, including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, involving reading and interpreting technical manuals and schematics, and assisting with solutions.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to follow current building codes and procedures and make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OSHA guidelines and safety precautions practices.
  • Working knowledge of standard office policies and procedures with computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, internet, and Department-specific software systems, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to prepare correspondence and detailed reports as required.
  • Working knowledge of standard filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and organized files and records.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of airport grounds management, basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical.
  • Ability to properly operate motor vehicle, and various hand and power tools, such as hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, drills, power saws, grinder, shovel, and snow blower / plow.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties and work at multiple facilities as needed.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including sitting / walking at will and for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, pushing / pulling / lifting / carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, reaching, bending, speaking clearly, driving, keyboarding, hearing mechanical sounds and communication, climbing ladders, crouching / kneeling, and handling / grasping / fingering objects.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other County departments, contractors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment and independently with limited directions and oversight, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers, work on several tasks at the same time, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions, present findings in oral or written form and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.
  • Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to State requirements.
  • Shall comply with all employer and Department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to serve 24-hour on call for emergencies.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
  • As a result of the duties associated with this job, there is the potential of becoming exposed to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious diseases. To safeguard employees and eliminate the liability placed on Hamilton County, employees working in this position shall begin the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination and subsequent training within 10 days of their initial job assignment per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(2)(i). The initial and two subsequent vaccinations shall be administered by the Hamilton County Health Department and free of charge to the employee. If the employee has previously received the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination, official documentation must be provided to the supervisor identifying the dates in which each shot was appropriately administered. A Temporary Medical Declination may be made for a period of up to six months. A Declination form must be completed, outlining the medical reasons for the temporary declination, and forwarded to the Safety & Risk Manager. Employees temporarily declining the vaccine are prohibited from performing any duties in which they may be exposed to a blood borne pathogen or other potentially infectious disease until they are able to begin / continue the series of vaccinations. Failure to comply will result in termination of employment.
  • Responsibility :

  • Incumbent performs moderately complex, standardized tasks applying basic knowledge of a variety of mechanical trades, technical manuals, and schematics. Moderate care and skill are required to prevent damage to tools and equipment and ensure safety of self and others.
  • Incumbent reports directly to Director of Airports.
  • Physical Effort :

  • Incumbent's duties may involve sitting / walking at will, sitting / standing / walking for long periods, reaching, bending, pushing / pulling / lifting / carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, crouching / kneeling, driving, keyboarding, handling / grasping / fingering objects, close / far vision, color / depth perception, speaking clearly and hearing sounds / communications.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Incumbent performs duties inside and outdoors, involving exposure to adverse weather conditions, noise, dirt, dust, power tools, toxic chemicals, heavy machinery, and working in high places, such as on roofs and ladders, for which safety precautions must be always followed to prevent injury to self and others.
  • Incumbent is occasionally required to serve 24-hour on call for emergencies, as assigned.
