Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scholar to enhance departmental research and scholarly output. This non-laboratory position focuses on writing, editing, data analysis, and grant development. The scholar will collaborate with emergency medicine residents, faculty, and medical students to design studies, analyze and interpret findings, prepare manuscripts and reports, and support grant submissions.
The position requires an in-depth understanding of research methods, data evaluation, and academic writing in the biomedical sciences or related fields. The ideal candidate is an accomplished scientific writer with strong analytical and mentoring skills who enjoys facilitating the success of others in academic emergency medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biomedical Sciences, Health Services Research, Biostatistics, Medical Education Research, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience in research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
• Evidence of academic or scientific writing ability (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, dissertation chapters, abstracts, or formal reports).
• Proficiency with statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata, SAS) and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate documentation.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, residents, and students.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience preparing or contributing to grant proposals (NIH, AHRQ, foundation, or institutional funding).
• Prior experience in clinical or biomedical research, emergency medicine, or medical education research.
• Experience conducting literature reviews, synthesizing scientific evidence, and preparing manuscripts for publication.
• Experience mentoring trainees or junior research staff in research or scholarly writing.
• Familiarity with IRB processes and human subjects research regulations.
• Experience working with large datasets, registries, mixed-methods research, or qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti).
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate and improve research or analytical methods.
• Experience preparing formal research reports, progress summaries, or technical documents for internal or external stakeholders.

Essential Functions and percent of time:

Research Development and Analysis (20%)

• Analyze, interpret, and document research findings for review and dissemination, with an early focus on outcomes research using existing databases.
• Compare actual and expected results and propose solutions to address deviations.
• Evaluate existing research methods, models, and data analysis techniques; recommend improvements to enhance quality, accuracy, and productivity.
• Organize and implement research plans, develop or refine methods for data collection, and ensure accurate analysis and evaluation of results.
• Generate, manage, and maintain research databases, ensuring integrity and reproducibility of data

Grant Writing and Funding Support (50%)

• Identify and track relevant grant opportunities (NIH, AHRQ, foundations, institutional programs).
• Collaborate with faculty and trainees to prepare and edit grant proposals, budgets, and supporting documents.
• Assist in proposal submission, reporting, and renewal processes.
• Provide strategic guidance to improve the competitiveness and clarity of proposals.

Manuscript and Scholarly Writing (10%)

• Partner with residents, faculty, and students to develop manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
• Conduct literature reviews, organize references, and ensure compliance with journal formatting and submission requirements.
• Help edit manuscripts for scientific rigor, clarity, structure, and flow.
• Prepare figures, tables, and summaries of findings for publications and presentations.
• Coordinate responses to journal reviewers and assist with resubmissions.

Research Mentorship and Collaboration (10%)

• Guide residents and medical students in research design, writing, and data interpretation.
• Conduct small-group or one-on-one sessions to support scholarly writing and data analysis skills.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams across the department and institution.

Research Administration and Reporting (10%)

• Assist in the preparation of proposals, reports, abstracts, and presentations for conferences and internal reviews.
• Maintain documentation and databases of departmental scholarly activity, including publications, grants, and presentations.
• Contribute to progress reports, annual reviews, and research productivity metrics.
