Overview:

We continuously recruit applicants to create a pool for temporary, hourly assignments as needed. This is not an on-call position. ASL Interpreters may be assigned a maximum of 29 hours per week dependent upon student need and interpreter availability. The DHH Center seeks qualified American Sign Language Interpreters with diverse cultural and linguistic skills to serve DHH students from intersectional backgrounds.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY, AT WILL POSITION
OPEN UNTIL FILLED. Applications will be reviewed on an as-received basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Hold current certificate/certification (CI or CT, NAD {levels 4-5}, CDI, NIC {Certified, Advanced, or Master}, Texas BEI) or EIPA (secondary with qualifying score) OR
  2. Intent to fulfill an Interpreter certification (CDI, NIC, Texas BEI) or EIPA (secondary with qualifying score) AND
  3. Have thorough knowledge of, ability to apply, and willingness to abide by the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

3. A detailed resume that summarizes educational preparation and professional experience for the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Director of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Center, the interpreter performs a variety of assigned work providing American Sign Language to English and voice-to-sign interpreting services to students who are D/deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (and/or may have other communication needs) the equivalent access provided for hearing students. The interpreter will have the ability to interpret a wide variety of college level academic content to convey all aspects of the communication access need to provide the most dynamically equivalent student experience possible. Interpreting assignments may include but are not limited to classroom lectures, seminars, and labs; counseling and student services appointments; office hours, study groups, sporting events, field trips, guest speakers, and other special events. Thorough application of RID’s Code of Professional Conduct is essential.

•Interpret proficiently in both English-to-ASL and ASL-to-English while accurately conveying the meaning, intent and spirit of participants.
•Rapidly process visual and audible information to convey complex concepts, specialized vocabulary and unexpected information to ensure student
comprehension and inclusion.
•Analyze situations accurately, evaluating alternatives, and adopting effective courses of action.
•Interpret, apply, and explain campus policies and procedures and reach sound decisions in areas applicable to the work.
•Maintain confidentiality
•Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential student issues and situations.
•Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
•Communicate effectively; orally, via ASL, and in writing.
•Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.
•Be familiar with and willing to use Microsoft Office Suite for emails and other workplace functions as needed.
•Submit timesheets with accuracy and timeliness.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Minimum 3 years of interpreting experience in higher education OR equivalent content in secondary educational settings (i.e. dual enrollment curriculum) for high school students.
  2. Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related field.
  3. Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program OR Interpreter Preparation Program
  4. 3,200 hours professional ASL interpreting.

License(s) & Other Requirements:

1. Currently hold OR intend to fulfill Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpretation (CI) & Certificate of Transliteration (CT); National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Basic, Advanced, Master; National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level 4 or Level 5 Certification; EIPA 4.0; OR BEI2. Employees may periodically be required to operate a vehicle that necessitates possession of a valid California driver’s license. Such employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Depending upon the work offered and accepted, the working environment can vary from indoor to outdoor.

The person holding this position is required to be present on Mt. San Antonio College’s campus to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.
