Job Description Summary :
The Bioengineering Division is seeking a Biomedical Co-op student to collaborate on the design development and application of cutting-edge technologies for microphysiological systems / multi-organ platform for medical countermeasure screening against high priority pathogens. The ideal candidate will be experienced in tissue engineering principles and techniques for primary mammalian tissues and be able to work closely with engineers and scientists to analyze experimental results and relay information for further design development. The position requires enthusiasm collaboration attention to detail and drive to improve the state-of-the-art in tissue models. We offer an atmosphere that fosters innovation a supportive team environment intellectual freedom and creativity and an emphasis on career development.
As a student in the Bioengineering Division you will be exposed to a broad range of technical challenges where you can apply your knowledge and learn new skills while seeing how problems of national interest are solved. Your experience will range from applying tissue engineering principles and designing and analyzing experiments to working directly with engineers and scientists to execute microphysiological experiments with several different complex organotypic tissue models (e.g. liver lung kidney) alone or as part of an interacting multi-organ system.
While working under the guidance of engineers and biologists you will learn how to work with industry leading novel microphysiological systems establish complex heterotypic cellular models (e.g. endothelial epithelial and immune cells) and perform and analyze complex functional and morphological assays. While working on tasks you will gain a better understanding of tissue engineering techniques including confocal immunofluorescence staining and imaging surface chemistry and extracellular matrix deposition optimization and real-time in situ assays (e.g. TEER) as well as standard offline assays including ELISA / Luminex. Draper is a unique environment where your work will be supported and guided by a highly interdisciplinary skilled and experienced team consisting of biomedical mechanical electrical and chemical engineers and biomedical scientists. Additionally Draper has state-of-the-art facilities on-site including a 13000 square foot BSL2 bio-lab (mammalian cell culture lab bacterial and viral culture suites synthetic biology lab microfluidic prototyping lab microscopy suite) rapid prototyping systems (laser cutting rapid prototyping lab featuring multiple 3D printers) a MEMS facility and a machine shop.
Assignments are designed to develop a practical knowledge of processes procedures equipment facilities and systems as well as their interrelationships within engineering disciplines. Assignments will also provide an opportunity to develop valuable networking connections which will help prepare and develop your skills for future career opportunities.
