Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $40.33 / hr. to $48.70 / hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties :

Supervises departmental shop and associated personnel. Oversees development and maintenance of existing and planned sample preparation laboratories. Works closely with instructors on organization and logistical support for departmental summer field camp and class field trips. Works with faculty and graduate students on design, construction, training, and maintenance of equipment and sample needs associated with Earth Science laboratory courses. Designs and fabricates equipment for research and instructional purposes. Serves as department safety officer and trains students in safe lab and field practices. Serves as project manager for departmental space maintenance, renovations and new construction.

Required Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma
  • 1-3 years In a shop setting
  • Basic carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical skills.
  • Basic repair skills for campus or field equipment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of construction design and fabrication.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shop practices and machining.

Special Conditions of Employment :

Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and / or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time :

  • 30% Supervisor of Shops and Laboratories - The supervisor administers the activity and training of all personnel involved in use of the departmental mechanical shop, wet laboratory, rock cutting and crushing and polishing, and mineral separations laboratories, with special emphasis on training for safe and efficient operation of equipment. Oversees scheduling of shop and lab facilities and conducts regular training of all personnel who wish to use the facilities. Responsible for keeping the shop and laboratories in good production condition and for scheduling and supervising maintenance of all machinery, instrumentation, and equipment as needed. Maintains inventory of equipment, tooling, and supplies for shops and labs, ordering and supervising the ordering of replacements as needed. Designs and fabricates new field, classroom, and laboratory equipment as needed in the department and stays abreast of new developments in earth science field and classroom laboratory technology, making recommendations for periodic upgrades to shop, sample preparation laboratories, classroom laboratories, and field equipment. Responsible for keeping accurate records, including time and material costs, job requests, and cost-sharing information. Processes recharges as appropriate. In consultation with Department Manager, interviews job candidates, selects employees, trains, and conducts performance evaluations of shop and lab personnel.
  • 20% Field Program - Responsible for logistics involved in planning and executing the six-week summer field course held at various sites off campus as well as academic year class field trips. Duties include overseeing vehicle reservations for all field trips, purchasing, inventory and maintenance of all necessary field equipment ? including research and design of new equipment as needed for specific class needs. Duties may also include scouting potential field trip stops and camp sites, preparation of instructional graphics, and leading discussions in the field on various topics. Responsible for hiring and supervision of casual employees for field camps and field trips. Consults with Department Manager on budget preparation and logistics for the summer field program and academic-year class field trips and assists selection of base sites, and involved in design, construction, operation, maintenance, repair, disassembly, and storage of field camp facilities. Determines equipment and supply needs. Orders materials, and arranges sources and logistics with vendors for food, gasoline, water, and other field supplies. Determines vehicle needs and coordinates vehicle orders. In connection with summer field and other departmental field courses instructs faculty, staff and students on matters of safety, field techniques, vehicle care, and logistics. Accompanies large groups on field trips and acts as safety monitor.
  • 15% Laboratory Support and Instruction - Work closely with faculty and graduate students in preparation of materials and exercises for various Earth Science classroom, laboratory, and field exercises. Including : acquisition and curating samples for various labs; acquisition and maintenance of classroom laboratory equipment (microscopes, digital tablets, surveying equipment, etc.). Assists in design and acquisition of equipment and materials needed for new teaching modules and laboratory exercises. Responsible for instruction of department's graduate students, faculty and researchers in the use of machine tools, rock slabbing and crushing equipment, and thin section grinding and mounting, and special emphasis on safety rules and safe practices.
  • 15% Design and Engineering - Consults with faculty members, professional research staff, graduate students, and other staff to facilitate design and construction of instruments and equipment. Involved in all stages of projects from conceptualization through design, selection of materials and components, layout, fabrication, and assembly, working independently from rough drafts, sketches, or verbal instructions. Keeps abreast of current designs, engineering technology, safety codes, and fabrication techniques. Prepares cost estimates for finished products proposed; researches commercially built instrumentation to determine suitability for a given purpose, and to determine if adequate substitutes can be found to enable cost comparison with proposed fabrication.
  • 10% Space Maintenance, Design and Construction - As project manager, advises Chair and Department Manager on departmental space maintenance, remodel and construction. Serves as liaison with Physical Facilities personnel to facilitate construction, conversions, repairs and maintenance of utilities and structures assigned to the department. Checks floor plans of architects and recommends improvements for laboratory and office layout. Assists new faculty with lab and office design. Works with Department Manager and Chair to adhere to budget parameters.
  • 10% Hazard Communication Coordinator - In the capacity as Department Safety Representative (DSR), serves as liaison with Environmental Health and Safety to implement and maintain and Hazard Communication Program in the department in compliance with campus and federal regulations which include : Coordinator of chemical waste, MSDS, compressed gas program, emergency action and fire prevention programs. Assists various professors and researchers in making sure all departmental laboratories meet EH&S safety requirements. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
