You will be part of a community health team dedicated to providing culturally sensitive, integrated primary and preventative health care to all, regardless of ability to pay or immigration status.

Position Summary

The full General Dentist is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical dental services and preventive care within a community health center and in mobile or school‑based settings. The role supports the Patient‑Centered Medical Home (PCMH) standards and includes training, orientation at East Palo Alto clinic locations, and occasional coverage at other East Palo Alto and Mountain View facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

To be performed in accordance with RFHN Policies and Procedures.

  • Serves as a member of a cross‑functional team of dentists that provides exceptional patient care, including four‑handed dentistry and oral surgery.
  • Handles all aspects of general dentistry.
  • Performs diagnostic and restorative procedures, including endodontics and fixed and removable prostheses for patients of all ages.
  • Treats oral diseases (hard and soft tissue) and collaborates with physicians to develop treatment plans.
  • Utilizes clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, and instruments to evaluate oral health, diagnose diseases, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Formulates and carries out dental treatments within scope of training and experience and refers complex procedures.
  • Uses personal protective equipment to protect patients, staff, and self from infectious diseases.
  • Advises or instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, or oral health care services.
  • Participates in after‑hours on‑call with other dentists.
  • Attends and participates actively in required meetings, trainings, and functions.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with practitioners in the community.
  • Communicates with dental laboratories and other outside vendors as needed.
  • Actively contributes to the achievement of Patient‑Centered Health Home (PCMH) goals and organizational strategic goals.
  • Supports the department with achieving budget goals and is cost‑conscious when requesting materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Follows established dental clinic and organizational protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Follows Standards of Care, Quality Assurance & Improvement Program and works collaboratively to achieve clinic goals.
  • Complies with all applicable State and Federal regulations, including the Dental Board of California (DBCA), OSHA, Cal OSHA and infection control guidelines.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality consistent with state and federal law and complies with all applicable regulations governing the practice of dentistry and clinical provision of care.
  • Records patient‑dentist transactions accurately and completely, completing referrals, data collections, and other required paperwork.
  • Educates individuals in the nature of oral health‑related conditions and in the general promotion of disease prevention.
  • Serves on the dental staff and other health center committees as assigned.
  • Assists in providing continuing education, on‑the‑job training, and orientation of community health center staff as requested.
  • Designs, develops, and implements appropriate Dental Department policies, protocols, and procedures, ensuring compliance with current professional standards.
  • Provides technical assistance and health education to the community as requested.
  • Participates in community oral health screening and prevention programs sponsored by RFHN.
  • Participates in short‑term and long‑term program planning for the Dental Department and the agency, including development of goals and objectives.
  • Provides consultation to the Chief Operating Officer and the Board of Directors regarding dental and oral health issues in the absence of the Chief Dental Officer.
  • Travels when necessary to represent the organization and attend meetings.
  • Assists in coordinating and integrating the organization’s dental programs with other corporate services for patient welfare.
  • Participates in recruitment and retention activities as necessary.
  • Performs other related and / or necessary tasks as directed by the Chief Dental Officer.

General Agency Duties

  • Fosters an environment that promotes trust and cooperation among patients and staff while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Promotes and exemplifies RFHN’s mission, goals, policies, procedures, and principles to supervisees and clinic staff.
  • Participates in outreach activities, agency advocacy, and ad hoc committees as requested.
  • Attends RFHN staff retreats and Board of Directors meetings as requested.
  • Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited dental school or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited general practice residency or AEGD program (highly preferred).
  • Active California Dental License, NPI number, and DEA registration.
  • Unrestricted license to practice dentistry in California.
  • Current CPR (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to be clinically fluent in Spanish (preferred).
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices (preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills (required).
  • Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges (required).
  • FTCA coverage or private professional malpractice insurance obtainable.
  • 5+ years of experience in all phases of dentistry and auxiliary utilization in a clinic setting.
  • Cultural competence working in a diverse low‑income community.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings (required). Knowledge of modern dentistry principles related to public health organizations and community health programs.
  • Working knowledge and experience with practice management system software (preferred).
  • Good customer service and ability to deal with patients courteously.
  • Demonstrates good time management skills and evidence‑based approaches to dental care.
  • Understanding of overall practice mission and collaborative achievement of short‑ and long‑term goals.
  • Knowledge of practice scope consistent with the mission and values of the organization.
  • Up‑to‑date with COVID‑19 and other vaccines per current CDC guidelines (recommended).
  • Salary

    The salary range for this position is $191,360.00 to $281,387.00 annually. Final base salary will be determined based on scope and responsibilities, job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, education, certification levels, and departmental budget. Internal equity with current employees will be considered.
