Position Information Hour Position Title Academic Support Aide Department Language Learning Center Department Summary The Language Learning Center (LLC) has four (4) openings for Academic Support Aides to support the Department of Languages and Culture. We welcome applications from work-study-approved students whose primary role is to tutor students enrolled in Spanish or American Sign Language (ASL) classes. The LLC provides personal and professional opportunities for Academic Aides who are studying ASL or Spanish or have intermediate-level experience with one of these languages. Further, the LLC sponsors cultural enrichment events and extracurricular activities, online and face-to-face, which are open to the NMHU and Las Vegas communities. General Job Description The Academic Support Aide is responsible for offering supplemental instruction that ranges from beginner to intermediate levels in ASL or Spanish, support bilingualism at all levels, and foster a welcoming atmosphere to all language learners who use LLC services. The Academic Aide is also responsible for maintaining effective communication with the LLC director, faculty members, coworkers and language learners, maintaining confidentiality and punctuality, and performing other duties as assigned. Specific Duties The position requires responsibility, good judgment, punctuality and dependability. Aides support LLC community and faculty members of the Department of Languages and Cultures. The position requires the ability to prioritize tasks, to collaborate, and to maintain good relations with the learners, coworkers and faculty.
Specific Duties• Tutor and assist Spanish or ASL students in person or online.• Provide supplemental instruction to students on an individual or small-group level.• Guide conversation sessions in ASL or Spanish.• Participate actively in organizing the tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.• Give presentations and coordinate student activities.• Attend trainings and development sessions with the LLC Director, Department Faculty, and the other tutors.• Learn to utilize electronic resources used in Spanish or ASL courses.• Prepare and facilitate skill-building sessions for students.• Perform language learning research relevant to the mission of the LLC • Review class material with students using the textbook, readings, worksheets or other assignments.• Maintain confidentiality of all records of student’s assessment results, progress, feedback, or classroom performance documents.• Attend LLC Meetings• Write and answer emails, or call and answer phone calls, to schedule tutoring sessions. Minimum Qualifications Education: College student at NMHU enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours. High school diploma or GED. No experience needed. Preferred Qualifications There is no prior experience required for this position. Applicants must be NMHU students enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours for the semester(s) to apply for the job. Applicants must possess a demonstrable proficiency in either Spanish or ASL, or both.

• Pursuing a major/minor in one of the programs of the Languages and Cultures Department. Physical Demands Onsite work may require the following physical demands: standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting. Tutoring Spanish makes use of frequent and prolonged speaking, while tutoring ASL requires speaking and excessive movement of hands, arms, and face muscles.
