AVP Underwriting Director – Excess Casualty
Join Zurich North America as an Executive Underwriter or AVP Underwriting Director for our Excess Casualty / Umbrella team in Los Angeles.
Responsibilities
Serve as a customer industry advocate, improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering end‑to‑end solutions.
Employ a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
Use risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at the point of sale.
Identify gaps and align Zurich’s products and value proposition to deliver contractual certainty to customers.
Demonstrate strong analytical skills and act as an innovative advisor.
Underwrite, analyze, and grow new and renewal Umbrella business.
Operate market‑facing and production activities within the growing Umbrella division.
Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manual rules.
Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships.
Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.
Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience working in a team environment.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Microsoft Office experience.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay is based on role, location, skills, and experience, following local laws. Eligible for bonuses and merit increases. Salary ranges : Executive Underwriter $113,100–$209,300 (15% short‑term incentive) and Underwriting Director $149,500–$276,900 (20% short‑term incentive). Hybrid remote working is available.
