Controller

Our client, a respected national nonprofit, is seeking a Controller to oversee all financial operations and drive organizational excellence. This is a high-visibility role where you'll lead a finance team, partner with senior leadership, and ensure financial integrity across the organization.

The Controller will lead and mentor a high-performing finance team, while acting as a key strategic partner to the executive leadership. You will play a critical role in shaping financial strategy, optimizing operational efficiency, and strengthening long-term sustainability and impact.

Responsibilities:

• Manage all accounting functions including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end/year-end close.
• Prepare, analyze, and present financial statements, budgets, and forecasts to leadership and the board.
• Ensure full compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and external reporting requirements.
• Lead the annual audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
• Develop, implement, and enhance internal controls, financial policies, and best practices.
• Oversee grant reporting, monitor restricted funds, and ensure accurate fund accounting.

Qualifications:

• CPA is required
• 7+ years of accounting experience with at least two years at the manager level
• Must have current or prior nonprofit industry experience
• Deep understanding of nonprofit financial reporting, compliance, and fund accounting
• Proven experience leading and developing finance/accounting staff
• Strong technical proficiency in accounting systems and Excel
• Exceptional communication, analytical, and strategic problem-solving skills
