Cardiology Nurse Coordinator - Summary Job Description
Overview
Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Clinical Development and the Medical Director of Cardiac Services, the Cardiology Nurse Coordinator supports patient care operations for the Heart Center, Cardiology Resident Clinic, and the Benning Road Cardiology site (occasional on-site coverage 1-2 times / month). This role does not routinely involve direct patient care but provides critical clinical and operational support to ensure smooth clinic throughput. The coordinator may assist CMAs during periods of high volume.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct pre-visit planning and train staff on department protocols
Manage orders, authorizations, and clinical documentation workflows
Answer clinical calls and provide telephone triage using the red / yellow / green matrix
Review referrals and schedule patients according to diagnosis pathways
Reconcile orders including EKGs, echos, stress tests, and X-rays
Compile consult notes and send information to referring providers
Serve as liaison for inpatient discharges and ER follow-up appointments
Track patients for value-based payment programs
Train and support medical assistants
Manage the cardiology task in-basket and ensure service level targets are met
Support throughput for departmental clinical trials
Collaborate with clinical leadership and physicians on process improvements
Perform medication refill coordination, documentation, and EMR updates
Complete additional clinical and administrative duties as assigned
Must-Have Qualifications
Active DC RN license with BSN - Required
2+ years ambulatory nursing experience or 2 years inpatient med / surg - Required
Experience in an academic health system - Preferred
Reliable transportation for Benning Road coverage
Nice-to-Have Skills
Bilingual

GI & Endocrine Nurse Coordinator - Summary Job Description
Overview
Reporting to the Senior Director of Clinical Development and the Chair of the Department of Medicine, the GI & Endocrine Nurse Coordinator supports patient care, clinical operations, and throughput for the Gastroenterology and Endocrine divisions. While this role does not routinely provide direct patient care, the coordinator may support CMAs during busy clinic periods.
Key Responsibilities
Implement pre-visit planning protocols and train medical assistants
Assist with blood sugar checks, finger sticks, and protocol-driven chart preparation
Manage orders, authorizations, phone calls, and prescription refill workflows
Collaborate with the Access Center Nursing team on triage processes
Support referral management using Schedule Advisor protocols
Provide pre-procedure and pre-surgery patient education
Coordinate follow-up appointments after discharge
Respond to authorization peer-to-peer requests
Serve as departmental representative on multiple committees
Quality Committee
Perioperative Committee
OR Committee
Surgery / Procedure Reconciliation Committee
Liaise between Howard University Faculty Practice Plan and Hospital
Complete additional clinical and administrative tasks as assigned
Must-Have Qualifications
Active DC RN license - Required
BSN, MSN, MHSA, MPH, or related degree - Preferred
3+ years ambulatory nursing experience or 2+ years inpatient med / surg - Required
