Join the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance (IPA), a powerful network of foundations, corporations, and other social investors working together to lead change, improve lives, and lift communities through effective philanthropy. Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) is an initiative of Lilly Endowment Inc., hosted by IPA, which has supported the development of a community foundation in each of Indiana's 92 counties since 1990. IPA is home to the technical assistance component of GIFT, which is supported by Lilly Endowment. The GIFT Technical Assistance team offers hands-on support and professional development to Indiana community foundation staff and boards.

Position Summary

This is a full-time, grant-funded position providing executive leadership for the training and technical assistance program associated with Lilly Endowments GIFT initiative for Indiana community foundations. Lilly Endowment has supported the development and growth of Indiana community foundations since 1990, including an extensive program of training and technical assistance.

The scope of the position is broad, encompassing administrative, programmatic, financial, and personnel management for the program.

  • REPORTS TO : President and CEO of IPA
  • SUPERVISES : Director of GIFT Programs, GIFT Program Manager, Technical Assistance Advisor, and consultants. Serves as interim CEO in his / her absence.
  • FLSA STATUS : Exempt

Position Specifics

Leadership :

  • Provide leadership and oversight for designing programs aimed at current and future needs of community foundations. Stay abreast of national trends, resources, and best practices within the community foundation field. Maintain strong working relationships with key partners inside Indiana and around the country. Engage on a regular basis with Lilly Endowment Community Development staff in developing technical assistance and programming goals for GIFT support of community foundations.

    • Management :

  • Supervise the performance of staff providing GIFT technical assistance and overseeing the work of external consultants. Manage GIFT budget. Serve as part of IPAs Management Team to ensure effective cross-department communication, team functioning, and programming for all IPA members.
  • Responsible for the Community Foundation Intern (CFI) Program, including timely processing of applications and payments, data tracking, and reporting to Lilly Endowment.
  • Develop an annual proposal and budget for Lilly Endowment for GIFT technical assistance that outlines the scope, content, and delivery vehicles for supporting Indiana community foundations on all aspects of foundation affairs and management, in consultation with IPAs President / CEO.
  • Act on behalf of the IPA President / CEO, as authorized, in financial, operational, and other IPA matters.

    • Technical Assistance

  • Ensure the provision of timely responses to requests for technical assistance and consultation from Indiana community foundations on all aspects of foundation operations (e.g., governance, finance, fund management, asset development) utilizing a broad range of methods and formats as appropriate (e.g., via phone, email, web-based, in-person, on-site, etc.), including direct provision of technical assistance by the Vice President, as appropriate.

    • Training

  • Direct the development and implementation of professional development and training programs on broad aspects of community foundation affairs and management, in response to needs assessment and input from the field, current and topical issues and trends, and other relevant content areas that promote the effectiveness of Indiana community foundations. The Vice President of GIFT Technical Assistance will serve as a trainer, as well as supervise the performance of other GIFT staff and external consultants in such roles.

    • Liaison to Lilly Endowment

  • Serve as the primary liaison with Lilly Endowment Community Development for the development of IPA Foundations grant proposals for GIFT technical assistance and the Community Foundation Intern Program, including primary responsibility for writing proposals and providing status reports under the grants. Ensure effective performance of responsibilities and budget tracking under the GIFT technical assistance grants.

    • External Relations

  • The Vice President of GIFT Technical Assistance represents the Indiana Community Foundation field to external partners and stakeholders. This individual also works closely with IPAs President / CEO to support GIFT and IPA as recognized voices in Indiana philanthropy. Maintain effective relationships with other local, statewide, and national organizations to promote and support Indiana community foundations.

    • Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in management or leadership positions; experience in community foundations or philanthropy is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including positions held, awards and achievements, and recognitions.
  • Experience in managing staff is advantageous.
  • Understanding of the fundamental activities and responsibilities of a community foundation; technical expertise preferred.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Project management and strong execution strengths, demonstrated experience in managing budgets.
  • Strong preference for Indiana community foundation experience.
  • Proficient with basic technology platforms and programs such as Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Practical knowledge and comfort in educational techniques and practices.
  • Well-developed relationship-building skills with multiple stakeholder interests.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of Indiana Philanthropy Alliance.

    • Physical Requirements

  • The majority of the job is located inside a downtown Indianapolis office during regular business hours of operation; however, occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
  • Regular use of the keyboard.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, bend, and stoop.
  • Flexible schedule that allows for conducting training at different times and locations.
  • Able to drive for travel around the state.
  • Consistent sitting for many hours at a time.
